Gaming Best way to format external hard drive?

I got a 1TB External Portable hard drive by Western Digial, whenever I put in my hard drie into my computer sometimes it takes 5min or more to read it, then it recommended me that I format it. Hard drive still works, but I need to format it and is formatting it via Windows 7 a good way? Or is there a better way

P.S I need it to stay compatible with Mac as well.

I do not think Mac's will read it if it is NTFS, you will need to format it to Fat32 to keep compatibility with both. I do not think Windows 7 will format large Fat32 partitions (including 1TB) do it with minitool partition wizard

You can get NTFS working on your mac with this. I've been using it for a while now and it works fine.

Weird, I formatted my 500GB HDD as one FAT32 partition without any issues.

The last time I did it, it took about 3-4 hours to finally tell me that partition is too big.
