What size SD card should I get (not microsd card)? 2GB, 4GB, or 8 or 16 or whatever? Im buying a gateway so... Yeah. What sixe do most people get?

Also, im getting a 32gb class 10 sd card. Um.... Would I need a special type of sd card that would work correspondingly to gateway? Or does any sd card work?

And what brand sd card should I get?

you need a microsdcard for gateway!
2g sd card that comes with system is enough for 3ds itself (if u dont want to buy games from eshop)but for gateway u need a microsd card and i recommend a 32(or 64g) gb class 10 sandisk or siliconpower!

SLC chip SD cards are always the best.
But they're for Industrial only.

The most expensive SD card for Consumer, such as the Toshiba UHS-2 one, is MLC chip.

SLC chips can be rewritten for 10k-100k times, while MLC chips can be rewritten for 3k-10k times.
There's another type of chip called TLC. It can be only rewritten 500-1.5k times.

Due to the poor endurance, avoid buying TLC chip SD cards unless you don't care about your Mii Plaza's save data, your Gateway Game's save data, etc.

A Japanese has done some personal tests about some current MicroSD's endurance.
Here is the result:
Sandisk Extreme Pro (MicroSD) - 8.9k times (MLC)
Transcend Ultimate (MicroSD) - 7.6k times (MLC)
Samsung (Blue font, 24MB/s, MicroSD) - 4.5k times (MLC)
Toshiba EXCERIA Type HD (MicroSD) - 1.3k times (TLC)

Any sandisk extreme cards are awesome. You can find them pretty cheap (compared to shop) on ebay. i used them for years and they never failed. I use one for my MT-card and its just fine

Make sure you order a microSD and not a full sized SD card ;) for the Gateway card.

As to size I have about 20 games loaded on an 8GB microSD right now. It's a class 10 so things come up/load pretty quickly.

If you get something larger read speed is important and class 10's are supposed to be able to read at least 10mb/sec. Some will read much faster so you may want to spend a few more dollars.

Format it at exFat in windows so you can drag/drop any 3DS image (some are 4GB and won't fit on a normal FAT32 formatted microSD card).

I dont know what SLC or MLC is, but I did some research on it. What do you suggest I buy, a MLC or SLC?

For the 3DS, not the gateway it sounds like a Sandisk MLC SD is your best bet, If you want to backup your own games then grab a 6gb or higher SD (largest roms are 4.2gb), otherwise 2gb will be fine.

and for the Gateway, make sure you get a class 10 Micro SD, or you will spend hours copying files.

May I ask what backups are for? For example, what do people mean when they say that they are going to backup their sysnand? Or when they say they are going to backup their games?

Backing up your sysnand is something you need to do incase you brick your 3ds, you will need your sysnand backup to fix your 3ds if it gets bricked. If you own legitimate games you can back them up onto your SD card using the gateway and from there you can copy them onto your gateway microSD to play them.

What is the difference between emunand and firmware spoofing?
Also KingBlank, I find it odd that you said "If I own legitimate games I can back them up onto my SD card using the gateway and then I copy them onto my gateway microSD card." Why would I need to do all of this if I can just download 3ds roms in general?

I suggest you watch this video by iT0uchStuff, it will tell you almost everything you need to know

as for backing up games, you don't need to do it, there are not really any benefits, but if you do want to; you will need a larger SD card than normal.

Try not to be so obvious that you are a pirate. Downloading 3DS roms where you live is a crime.

One last question. What size SD card (not microSD card) should I get? Take regards with everything.. I am getting a gateway, Im going to use emunand, Im going to get tons of 3ds games, I might get several games from eshop. With all this, what size is preferrable, or could I just simply use the 2gb sd card that comes with the bought 3ds?

The stock 2 GB SD card wasn't even enough to hold EmuNand + Pokemon X from the promotion.

Your EmuNAND will partition about 1 GB away from your system's SD card, so account for whatever size you get minus 1 GB. As far as the size of the games themselves go, I would approximate 1-1.5 GB per game. From what I"ve seen, games are ranging from 512 MB to 2 GB in most instances. Occasionally you will see a 4 GB or so game, so certainly keep that in mind.

Personally, I have a class 10 64 GB Sony MicroSDHC in my Gateway for all of my storage and a 32 GB MicroSDHC (with an SD converter) Class 4 Sony card in my regular DS slot. I did some cartridge backing up and admittedly, it takes a little while to rip to a class 4 Sony card--but it reads fast enough for eshop games that it's negligible at best (unlike a Toshiba Class 4 card which takes eternity and a half to load).

As far as the class 10 Sony card, games load almost instantly in multiROM and there's practically nonexistant load times.

I fear that what your talking about is the MICROSD Card, not the SD Card. I was talking about the SD Card. For the Microsd card, im going to get a class 10 sandisk 32gb. Now lets move on to the sd card. What size sd card and brand of it should I get?

if your downloading legitimate eshop games, you will need more space if not....well the 2GB should be ok

So 32 GB MicroSD for Gateway roms, and if you want to download eShop gaames + have emunand you're going to need maybe a 8 GB minimum, but I would go with 16 GB to be safe. They're really cheap.
