update: I decided to update to 20.1.1 (current firmware, launch day) as 20.1.2 might be coming soon (patching any known exploits) & it'd be impossible to stay on 20.1.1 if I don't update now. I also linked my Nintendo account as from past experience for SW1, some functions do not work without linking; and I used password instead of QR code, in case there's some dumass timeout / expiration issue for the latter option.
the next step is to insert the SDXC... which is still on its way (I should've got one when the SW2 is on its way)

*any microSD is ok as long as formatting exFAT to trigger the extra update

What functions are not available on sw1 if you don’t link?

I don’t have a switch 1 and I used a local account to login to the switch 2. Should I create a nintendo account?

I ended up registering for a Nintendo account and linking. There’s an option:

Use online services option. Tick this on?

I'm pretty sure if you play games from an SD card (SW1) it will think it's installed from eShop hence "When a game on your Nintendo Switch prompts you to link to a Nintendo Account, it means the game requires online features or content that are tied to a Nintendo Account. To proceed, you'll need to either create a new Nintendo Account or link an existing one to your user profile on the console. " unless you edit the flags (advanced, not recommened)

So, you should create & link your SW2 to a Nintendo account now, as it was standard practice to prevent future errors / popups, however, I don't know if there's a difference for local vs online-created accounts (cannot test now, both SW1 & SW2 are linked to a Nintendo account already)

Hello!

Please keep in mind that SDXC refers to the capacity of the SD Card (SD Extended Capacity; between 32GB and 2TB). It does not say anything about it's speed, which means it may not qualify as a SD Express card (you have to explicitly look for that name) and as such may not function with the Switch 2.
If you just get the card to force the driver update, there has been reports of people being able to trigger it by inserting a regular microSD formatted to exFAT into the system whilst using the "Import Screenshots and Videos" feature...

I confirm the possibility to trigger the update via regular microSD

thanks so much... returning my non-express microSDXC when it arrives (can't believe I missed this detail!)

1. Open it up
2. Turn it on
3. Connect to internet
4. Do first update
5. Insert a micro SD card and agree to SD card slot update
6. Download Mario kart update
7. Disconnect from wifi, delete internet settings.
8. Never update again and only play Mario kart for the next 3 years

The console will probably ask to renew the digital copy after a year or two so if folks want to play it unlimited... Cartridge.

Anyway, much as I love MK8D I couldn't see myself playing it constantly for 1-2+ years nor would I do it for MKW. It just gets monotonous.

I do love Forza Horizon 4 it has a lot of variety and creativity with the racing tracks and challenges (can't wait to play the LEGO DLC).

I keep seeing this, what is the deal with keeping it in a box? you think Nintendo somehow would connect to your console if you turn it on or take it out of the box?
If you keep it in the box, you can resell it for MSRP at any time. If, at the end of the switch 2's life, no exploit has been found, you can hold on to it for another half generation or so and make more than MSRP (see Wii Us NIB that are selling for $700).

If you open it though, well, congratulations on your very nice "like new" switch 2. Collectors won't really care, they want new sealed in box for some reason.

The MKW bundles in the U.K. were sealed or should have been, but the console only sets had no seals so you could just open it. Didn't really like that.

Update 20.1.5 (skipping anything before 20.1.1) has arrived:
https://yls8.mtheall.com/ninupdates/reports.php?date=2025-06-18_01-15-01&sys=bee

General system stability improvements to enhance the user's experience.

Very generic and suspicious changelog btw.

Wii firmware updates that attempted to block Homebrew were labeled like:
Behind the scenes enhancements that do not affect any prominently-used features or menus but will improve system performance.

3DS firmware updates that attempted to block Homebrew were labeled like:
Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience.

So yeah guys... it begins. Time to stay on 20.1.1 or 19.0.0 and wait... for a long time.

Oh boy, I was playing a lot of Mario Kart World online, and having a blast, alas that's done with now. Was chaotic fun while it lasted! I have two systems on 20.1.1, and one system on 19.0.0, I'm excited to see how things play out going forward. For the sake of game preservation of course! :D
