This needs further confirmation.

Some people have said standard microSD functionality comes with the day one update. [snip]

I guess it comes down to when you insert your SD card. On my first Switch 2 i booted, applied the day 1 update, and then the system asked if i'd use an SD card, upon insertion of which it then applied another update. On the second Switch 2 i inserted it prior to turning it on, and it only updated once. So for those who already had it inserted during the initial update, it might appear as one thing. But it does come separately if a SD card is not present during the initial update.

Virtual gamecard DRM:

Both consoles on day one firmware. Both have the same associated Nintendo account.

First was setup.. first. It was offline, the game was not loaded or ever interacted with, with that console, yet. Other games and virtual gamecards had been loaded, ejected, installed, and run previously.

Second was a bundle console. I redeemed the Mario Kart World code via the eShop. Needed to use virtual gamecards to load it. This second console required 'one-time' pairing with the first console before using any virtual gamecards. Both consoles had to be online during this.

If you want two consoles with one stashed away, you want to have them both right now before further firmware releases.

Edit: At this point I found what seems to be a bug. My original, hacked Switch 1 on 19 (?) firmware is able to play games loaded onto these other consoles concurrently. It's not the new 'online licence' feature. Before having the second Switch 2 in play, virtual gamecards locked out this original Switch as expected (however being firmware from before VGC, it just said a game can't be played after checking online).

And another issue: To see and interact with virtual gamecards you've hidden on-console, you need to login via Nintendo account every time. Do not hide virtual gamecards.

whats the point in doing that if you will have the consoles offline? Even if you pair them now, you have to be online and thus update to latest fw to load a virtual gamecard in either of them

Per Nintendo website:

***An internet connection is required the first time you start a game that you have loaded to your system. An internet connection is also required each time a loaded title is ejected.

How does one even get to link two Switch 2 consoles in the first place? Even following the official guide to do so doesn't work. I never get asked to link the consoles, the VGCs just unload on the first console when loading them into the second and vice versa.

Per Nintendo website:
If I didn't do it, the second console, my legit one, wouldn't be able to use virtual gamecards.

And without doing unnecessary updates, you generally want to get your closeted console to have done as wide a variety of tasks as possible before packing it away.

And as we've said, this is the equivalent of making notepad do something unexpected and then claiming you've exploited Windows. Userland exploits are will always exist and get you almost nothing in terms of access to the host operating system. It isn't something to be championing around as if the Switch 2 has already been modded to run homebrew/CFW.

Just to be clear with regards to Switch 1 games, there is nothing in the 20.1.1 firmware that "enables" Switch 1 games. Most will still need a game update to launch. The firmware update likely tells the Switch 2 which ones need an update.
It doesn't change the fact that he did not provide any proof for his claims. People also used their mig switches and the Switch did not brick. Shitmuncher stays shitmuncher

I set up the backup Switch 2, through the set up i linked it to my secondary NNID. I also formatted my Micro SD Express on my Mac (because I already had inserted it in to my daily Switch 2), then i inserted it in to my backup Switch 2. It downloaded both updates and updated to the latest OS. I downloaded Tetris 99, Inserted a Switch 1 game and am now downloading my Swot h 2 game to my Micro SD Express (crappy game key card). Once done, I will boot all games once. Remove the Micro SD format it again on my Mac, reinsert in to my daily Switch 2 and place this one in my cupboard until the day comes. I have also disabled automatic updates and removed the saved WIFI connection so it can’t auto connect and download an update by mistake in 12 months time.

Is it important to install a game on the intended (future) hacked switch before storing it away? I've just got the firmware at 20.1.1 with no games installed.

Yes, I would, and I did. I installed a SW1 Game, all Emulators (Classics), a SW2 Game (Fortnite), and some Demos, then stored.

I'd also suggest games making up a variety of engines. And games that share user content, like levels, especially if they're hosted on the dev's server. Even better if they're cross-platform. And, anything with an editor. There are also some game creation things like Fuze and SmileBasic.

Edit: If you have the money, any big-name games as well, like Mario Kart World. They'll likely receive extra attention.

Edit: Some suggestions: Levelhead, RPG Maker MV Player, Quake 1 and 2, Fuze4 and Fuze Player, Nintendo emulators and Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, Animal Crossing Island Transfer Tool, Mario Maker 2, Don't Starve, Factorio.

As that's dependent on licenses it'll eventually ask to renew and as it'll be on a low firmware it won't be accessible.

I only installed game updates of my NS1 game carts didn't bother with demos or whatever.

This is a great suggestion, when you find them, would you mind sharing the name, so that's easier for future people? I am curious as well! Thanks all

I hate the C button as I'll never use the online play feature so if it can be remapped to being something useful it won't be useless anymore.
Post automatically merged:

You can use a regular SD card and it's recommended because if you stay on the original you'll only have 232GB usable storage.

If you go with a 256GB... It's 238GB.

I've updated the DNS on my WiFi connections so when the next firmware is released the console won't be able to download it. :)

Literally anyone can remap the C button on their S2 already, using the accessibility setting Button Remap.

Hey guys, just received my switch 2 and want to get the day1 update and express sd card update. I have no express sd card, but want to use the method described here. I have formatted a normal sd card with exfat and inserted into my switch 1 to save some screenshots.... but as soon as I insert the sd card into my the switch 1 it wants to format it again. Is this fine and should I progress or am I doing something wrong?
