Gaming Best GBA RPGs...

Personally, I think that the GBA has had more quality RPG's than any other modern consoles, with the PS1 and SNES contending for spots as well.

Playing Golden Sun now for the 1st time.

Impressions:

Good:

- Lots of places to explore. Game is pretty big.
- Like the puzzle aspects when finding new Djinn & items
- Not as goofy as alot of other RPGs. Main RPG dialogue is more serious, if repetitive
- Nice graphics and combat cutscene attacks (For the GBA)
- save anywhere. 3 save slots!
- nice use of graphics in the enviroments.
- luv the non-combat abilities...reading minds is kinda cool.

Bad:

- aaaaaaa!!! too many random encounters!!! every fifteen seconds!!

- music too repetitive and doesn't sound as good as ff4 or ff6's music. very average
- dungeons pretty complex. easy to get lost & hard to make progress sometimes and with the 15 sec encounters can get frustrating
- has maybe too many elements from other games (colosseum contest, fighting monsters at sea, gambling mini-games)
- aaaaaaaa!!! too much emoting! some characters reactions during dialogues is unexplained or redundant! gets annoying at times and drags out some dialogue scenes.
- the story is kind of blah really. the bad guys don't seem that bad or dangerous, not like in ff4 or ff6 anyways. but who knows, i'm prob only about half-way through now. maybe there's a bigger baddie towards the end.

its not a bad game imo. Its definately good, but not great (needed a better story and music to be great). and i'm not sure about the combat. the monsters always seem to gang-rape Ivan (

Pretty good pro and con list, but I think one that should be added into the con area is djinni acquisition. Sure some of them (most really) are easy gimmes that come along the way as they should as you move up in experience, but the problem are the few others. Whoever thought having a few hiding in a dark corner or on a random(by appearance I know it's set) spot that's 100% unmarked on the map was bullshit. I hated that to no end as it basically meant find a guide with a pic or start hunting in the general area with a faq which is NOT how any game should dignify itself.

I don't really agree with your random encounter complaint though as it's no more intense than much of the other random pop up classic RPG style type games. And yes...the emotes suck. I think the game in general gets overhyped and loved just because it had Nintendo and Camelot (hot shots golf people) involved on it.

gah, I didn't know that about the djinni being random. I've found a fair amount of them (even the ones that needed you to use psyenergy to get to them), but maybe I need more...just got into the desert and those Storm Trolls are slamming me hard! 3, level 3 and 1 level 4 djinni attacks and it still wastes my entire party with 120+ multi-damage attacks per round!

Yeah, you're probably right about the random encounters. it's just been awhile since i played an old-time rpg...got used to being able to wander around exploring with some of the newer rpgs i've been playing. i'm probably not fighting *enough* which is why the storm trolls are beating me.

my opinion has gone up a notch though, after getting out of the caves and finishing the colliseum. i'm wondering who's really going to be the big bad guy now...(SHHHH, don't tell me and spoil it if you've beating it already! :-) )

- Lufia - Ruins of Lore is a pretty good standalone RPG, but it's not as good as the first three(although the first game was pretty tedious), especially when it comes to characters.
- Mother 3, although it's been mentioned and you've played it(if you're even still reading this topic)- I love that game immensely. It's certainly one of my favorite games, and after beating it I also felt like playing other GBA RPGs. :]
- I find Riviera rather boring, to be honest. And repetitive. And Eh. Wasn't very interested, seemed generic.
- Golden Sun, haven't finished playing that. Need to get around to it.
- Final Fantasy, IV's good, I like V, haven't played through VI yet.

And yep.

Thanks to this thread I started playing gba games that I didnt know they exist. I'm playing those games with a psp emu. The bad thing is, I cant play boktai 1 cause it gives me an error solar sensor is broken. I already patched the file so... guess Ill have to start with boktai 2.

God, I can't stress this enough. Fire Emblem (series) is just amazing, so addicting, I just keep coming back at it all the time!
Absolutely love it, such nice games.

Golden Sun 1 & 2
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Fire Emblem
Shining Force
Pokemon: Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, but I personally prefer Ruby.
i also recommend them!
