I like AVG myself...
AVG is SHIT. It never detected ANYTHING me or my friend made, but instead detected a "virus" in grandma's cookies under the temp files in her profile dir, and she thought it was MY fault.

nod32 is made of win.
'nuff said.

After updating with the SP1, two of the first things I grabbed were IMGBurn and Grabit 1.7.1

I decided to go ahead and grab the 30 day trial of NOD32 and it is working smooth and integrated perfectly with windows so I think after 30 days I will buy a year or two of it

Thanks again for all the suggestions, guys!

Slight aside - you might want to try alt binz instead of grabbit. I found it to be much less processor intensive. It also has some really nice features - like a free search and it only downloads as many pars as it needs to do the repair, auto repair and extraction etc.

Of course it wouldn't find something you make... It wouldn't have the heuristics for it... Especially if it didn't spread very widely.

And my favorite anti-virus is none. They're stupid. You should just know what you're downloading before you download it.

nice that sounds good! The only reason I use grabit currently is because it's free so I will give this a look!

I personally like Avast.

I have been using it on my laptop for about 3 years, and on my old desktop for about 4 years. I hardly even know it is running, as the only thing that gives it away is the daily update of the database and the weekly updated version.

It keeps me up pretty well, plus it is free. I havent used too much else, except Norton, which is the crappiest product ever! I think that program incorporates itself into every aspect of your computer! Try to uninstall and you get errors out the arse.

Everyone is talking about kapersky and nod32, so I will give one of those a try sometime soon. I know kapersky cost cuz we sell it at walmart for like 20 usd. How about nod32?

Thanks.

norton defo lost their ways and become notorious for making their apps heavy and difficult to uninstall. norton was good way back whens there was mcafee and norton battles lol ;P

top10reviews.com is a neat site to see how well programs are ranked, based on the overall criteria on their ranking table. most of you guys use and recommend nod32; instead of it being #3 its #1 ;P
i notice that top10reviews did not include a section for how much resources the program actually takes. the closest category for this section is effectiveness and they're all 5/5 effective. o_O let top10 give you a ballpark's idea of which anti virus are the best

i tried nod32 and kaspersky on some light usage a whiles back but to no avail. =[
as for me i think any antivirus on my computer and windows firewall causes too much hassle. i have my dlink router as my only firewall

That bitdefender sounded good but then I read some more reviews that it is slow and does not uninstall completely. CNET gave NOD32 a slightly better rating. But I think I'm going to check out kaspersky as well.

edit: think I'm going to stick with NOD32 for good except it doesn't come with anti-spyware protection.

What's a good anti-spyware program? spy sweeper? counter spy?

@Bob Loblaw
you want to hijack this antivirus thread for anti spyware now ? ;P

im thinking back in my past again, lol. i used to use spybot: search and destroy, ad-aware, and spywareblaster like a fiend ! scanned like every week.. o_O. now years later i dont use any antispyware nor do i have the habit of cleaning up the temp and private data on my lappy. how i digressed =[

Haha well I did start the thread! I can't hijack my own thread...Or can I?!

I was thinking of trying AVG anti-spyware 7.5. The new one. I don't know though. Is AVG a system hog or?

Right now according to windows task manager (which is has probably rendered my argument void) about 1.5 megs of ram (0% cpu) across the stuff that stays in the background and 53 megs (anywhere from 2% to 35% cpu (dual core so no worries here)) for the scan in progress. If I liked I could ride myself of half the resident stuff (update manager: I will almost certainly reboot before the next one) and as I said when you tell it to get lost it does so with no more than an "are you sure"?
The scan naturally slows the drive but you can pause it if you have some stuff to do.

edit: my bad I missed the antispyware part. For that I suggest you become proactive and get something like a squared hijack free and then something you tell to scan rather than stay resident like spybot and ad-aware

Here's a recent article that may be of some use to some people http://sunbeltblog.blogspot.com/2008/03/ma...-antivirus.html

There are some benchmarks listed at the bottom regarding security features of current/recent AV programs and their effectiveness.

One test it could've done with is testing the system resource usage while scanning but most arn't too heavy now even on fairly low end systems.

Personally I use NOD32 which is in the tests and it is a good lightweight AV that I've been using for about 2 years or so now so that might be worth considering.
