I'm ordering a New 3ds XL on amazon and while i'm excited for tomorrow, i do perfer the aqua blue look of the Old 3ds. Bottom half being blue and the top being black. It looks pretty glossy and nice tbh. I don't really care for fingerprints either.
I'm not really digging the plastic with the New 3ds, it looks like any other nintendo product, but even worse since usually most black nintendo products have a nice glossy finish (wii, old aqua blue 3ds, Wii U deluxe,)
What do you guys think? What's your favorite 3ds look?

Metal Slime 2DS. I just wish it was a N3DS XL and ran in English. 00000623_01.0.jpg

    That's amazing!

I own a day one 3ds and a 2DSXL pokeball edition (bought for like 60€ at a sale) and I must say that the 2DSXL is just so incredibly light and the screens are so big is a joy to use

To me, the best is the New 3DS (non-XL). I think the faceplates are a nice novelty and it has all the features intact.

I'd have a tough time deciding between a New 3DS and New 2DS XL if I were buying a 3DS console today.

the N2dsXL is the main reason i'm getting a New 3ds xl, even if it's harder to brew due to the stupid sd card placement
Like, it looks like 2 smartphones glued together. Also, the speakers are on the same parts where you'd hold the console. I'd perfer the new 3ds xl, charging isn't a problem since i already have a old 2ds charger. :D

New 3DSXL or you better just buy a Vita.

  7. They all have flaws. If you're looking for objectively best, then that would be either of the N3DS models, just because of their higher processing power and compatibility with N3DS exclusives.

N3DS good if you like customizable faceplates and portability, N3DS XL good if you're into bigger screens. N2DS XL good if you really don't care about 3D because it costs less, but it's built very cheaply and it shows.

Hinges are an unnecessary point of failure, and I can't stand them. Therefore, 2DS wins by default. It's not without flaws though. Just like the N2DS XL, it's built cheaply, in various ways (lack of modularity is an issue but I won't really get into that here), but at least it feels rather robust in the hands and the plastic feels like it's decent quality. I'm really not a fan of the squishy rubber dome buttons though, I'd much rather have clicky buttons like the other models. And I guess the mono speaker might be a problem to a lot of people, I really don't care though.

I might like hinges more if they were built more like what the GBA SP has. That design is awesome. It feels super robust, there's so much more room for ribbon cable to breathe, and it's designed in a way that taking it apart and replacing the hinge (or the entire shell) is as frustration-free as possible. I can't trust Nintendo's hinge design ever since the DS Lite. I'd much rather go with the hinge-less design.

It's not even bad, anyway. It's less portable for sure, but considering that I never really take it out of the house, portability is not a concern. And if I did want to bring it somewhere, I have a carry case for it, so the screens aren't really at risk of getting damaged, unless some spectacular accident happened.

It's somewhat nostalgic, too. Goes back to the GB/C days and such when handheld consoles of the time didn't have hinges. Really nice with VC titles. And the absurdly low price point for the console is a really good thing. This thing plays the majority of all GB, GBC, GBA, DS and 3DS games, plus NES if you are so inclined (and I'm not even including 3rd-party emulators), and it only costs like $50.

If I were to get a N2DS XL, this would probably be my preferred model, but it'll probably never be released outside of Korea and Japan, so hey. That being said N2DS XL has enough flaws, and I don't have enough of an interest in the N3DS-exclusives, that I probably will never bother getting one.

2ds... I only really adored it because it was an introduction to the 3ds line. Honestly if it were any of the other consoles, i would have loved them tenfold. TBH i only really care for the XL 3dses, no fucking way i'm gaming on that small ass screen in 2020 (even if it's a 2015 console) Theyd be better for my donkey kong gorilla hands, and they'd look prettier too (with the added bonus of 3d on the 3ds models) The only thing i hate about the N3ds is the insane price. nearly 200 for a pre-switch handheld is pretty crazy. but even then it's better than the launch 3ds price (200-250)
You can rag on me for getting this over the switch but lol, that library is too good to pass up. My 2ds died like 3 years ago, and i only really used it for a few games like boxboxboy, shantae GBC and Sonic lost world 3ds. (last one being a bigass mistake lmao, nothing compared to the wii u/pc version) Then i saw rhythm heaven megamix, Super Mario 3d Land, A link between worlds, and the gorgeous OOT/MM remasters. Also MK7, and DS on the go ( the only systems i were able to play DS on were PC and wii u). and instantly i started thinking why the hell i ditched 3ds for the fucking Wii U.

  9. Yeah I can get the appeal for the bigger screens. They're probably a bit easier on the eyes too, since you can hold the console a bit further away and still see just fine. Especially on the N3DS models with the eye tracking, if you use the 3D. I've never tried it but I hear it's night and day compared to the original 3DS/XL. Though I really don't care about the 3D, but it's really nice for those who do.

One more thing to mention, speaking of screens. Due to how the top screen works for the glasses-free 3D, the original 3DS/XL and N3DS/XL all have uneven, non-square pixels on the top screen when playing games in 2D mode. The 3D needs to be on for the picture to be sharper, with proper square-shaped pixels.

The original 2DS does not have that issue, because it has a completely different type of screen, so all pixels are always square-shaped, on both screens. The N2DS XL however essentially just uses a 3D screen that is permanently set to 2D mode, so you'll always have a scanlines-like effect on the top screen. (image)

Because of this, the original 2DS actually has the best 2D picture quality out of all 3DS models. The regular-sized models also have higher pixel density compared to the XL models, which also results in a sharper image, but the larger screens definitely have their advantages. At the end of the day though, every single model has its drawbacks and there's no objectively perfect one, so you've just gotta go with what works best for you. The N3DS/XL both might just have the edge overall though. I just can't excuse the N2DS XL's build quality.

One thing I like about the XL models also, is that they generally have two positions in which the hinge will lock, one of which is really nice for when you want to have the console sitting on a desk or something instead of holding it in your hands. For certain slower-paced games this can be really nice. You can still put the screen in that position on non-XL models, but it's not ideal. And the original 2DS obviously really sucks for that lol.

Well, you could mod a N3DSXL and a N2DSXL to use this case in a N3DSXL and have it in english.
I don't really care for Dragon Quest (only ever played Builders 1 & 2) but i gotta admit it looks pretty cool.

Old2ds is a great dev system / starter system and the price alone is amazing in this day and age. Those shoulder buttons are so nice and it just has a lot of charm as a weird looking / retro styled portable system. Shame on you for disparaging it (your comment seems to be backfiring which is heartening).

My desert-island / gun-to-my-head-must-choose system would have to be the new3dsXL though.
It's not the most comfortable or cheapest system, but it's probably the best compromise out of all 6 to play the entire 3ds library.

I would choose new2dsXL if not for the lack of 3D. Comfort is a big plus when you have mild tendonitis.

@zoogie, if you can land one of these for cheap, this makes using n3DSXL so much better. I wish I could CAD model and batch replicate that hand grip design for not only the n3DSXL but also the n3DS and n2DSXL.

You know what would kinda make the o2DS better? Joy-con analog mod (yes, cue the drift jokes).

I really like the small n3DS. I feel like with the low resolution of the 3DS screens, the graphics actually look better on the smaller models. And the screen size is bumped up slightly from the o3DS, which I thought was a bit on the small side, Based on sales numbers though, I didn't expect the majority to agree with me.
You can find grips for the small n3DS, I have one from Cyber Gadget. Makes it way more comfortable to play on for hours, it's just a bit of a hassle to put on and take off, and I don't usually bother bringing it with me.

I like the n3DS too but can't stand playing it nor the n3DSXL in brick form factor. Those cramps right below where the thumb and index finger meet makes long gaming sessions impossible. Short 5-15 minute play throughs are fine.

What makes that MHXX hand grip stand out are those shoulder buttons. It's a damn shame Hori didn't created one for the n3DS. If such a grip design combined with the rubberized TPU coating found on Cyber Gadget was ever produced, I think that plus the Lenovo TrackPoint nub c-stick mod, and (personal preference) dual IPS screens could make the n3DS one of the best handheld setups ever.

Anyone know what's the copyright law in regards to reverse engineering or replicating the mold templates of an established consumer product? Like if someone decided to 1-to-1 copy the design of said grip in SolidWorks, readjusted the dimensions to fit the n3DS, and then posted the cad files on GitHub?

The only Dragon Quest I've ever played was the original Dragon Warrior. I just like the case. I used google translate camera to hack it, put my games on, and had to set them to think they were in the US region. A little work but it was pretty easy to do.

I’ve got them all except the first 2ds and I play my N3DS the most. Carry it to work everyday. Love the faceplate concept. Screens are not as smal, as original 3ds and not as big as the xl. Look great to me. Having said that, you can’t go wrong with a N3DS XL. Either of those is a winner.

Not sure if screen quality matters to you but every single Zelda Edition new 3DS XL that I've seen has been dual IPS . . . we're talkin 9 for 9 ... just throwing that out there

I figure it would still count as a separate thing, much like open source recreations made by reverse engineering existing code. As long as it doesn't have any trademarked logos on it, and you're not trying to sell it as the original, otherwise it could be considered counterfeiting. But I'm not an expert on law by any means.
