Big in comparison to what? All roms are different sizes, up to 128megabytes at the moment.

most recent roms are bigger. It all depends on the content of the cart.

64megabytes isn't really strangely large. probably a good third of DS games are that size.

Average:
First couple of hundred, 128Mbit (16 MByte) to 256Mbit (32Mbyte)
It then got higher and had some more in the 512 range.
Nowadays 512 is probably the usual, actually I just checked and 512Mbit games just took the lead in the last 4 releases.

Bear in mind roms get trimmed (sometimes quite a lot) and you can also rip junk (intro movies, sound, other languages...) quite simply from a rom:

Anyhow if you really want to dig into some maths here is an excel spreadsheet with most releases and their sizes on (in bytes so divide by 1024^2 if you want megabytes):

From our database including the xxxx (Kiosk, Demo, Nintendo Club).

64 Mbit 142 roms
128 Mbit 297 roms
256 Mbit 367 roms
512 Mbit 369 roms
1024 Mbit 83 roms

So it's very popular to go beyond the GBA cart size limit of 128 Mbit. It's nice how developers are embracing all of the DS capabilities!

I know, that's a lot of assumptions.

Actually, the GBA cart limit is 256Mb... see Yggdra Union and others
