Hacking Applying game updates on newer console

I'm currently on 9.2 firmware (awaiting Gateway) and I have another 3ds that is on 9.4, is it possible to use the SD card and game cart from the 9.2 3ds to update the title on the 9.4 3ds, and use the updated game back on the 9.2 3ds? My concern is that the 9.4 firmware might make my SD card/update not compatible with the 9.2 firmware, is this correct or am I over-thinking this?

If this isn't viable, are there any alternatives?

The content on the SD cards are console-locked.

No, download cia's and riskily install them to your system nand.
Or wait for emunand, which might even be in the final release.

Or worry for nothing.
