Actually it is not showing up at all when I plug into PC - my mistake (that is my PC's empty SD card slot that was showing). Maybe instead I can format it from within Android? Settings -> Storage -> USB Storage -> Erase SD?
When I try to enter the Gallery app it says "No External Storage available" .. so oops I guess all my photos are deleted. Or not. maybe its just a symbolic link thats needs restoring?
I'm now seeking help elsewhere as I don't think the solution to my problem is much to do with this app in particular:
