I am not aware of any remakes/homages, homebrew or otherwise.
That would then leave you with DSx86 family. The original is right out so you are looking at the DSTwo version, specs wise it would seem to be out but might almost be worth a try if you have one.
For portable use you would be better off finding a PSP and using its port. Or something that has a better DOS port/emulation.

Well, from what I've heard from my parents, he had a seizure last night, perhaps an epileptic episode, fucking died, had a near death experience, my dad called the paramedics, they showed up, took him to the hospital, and he woke up covered in tubes, and started complaining.
