To chip in I'd say Speed Racer & Asphalt GT 2. Ducati Racing is ok, every other (none mario) racer I've found to be extemely tedious.

There are a few quite decent to very good racers for DS. These are the good ones that I know about:

- Mario Kart DS (yes I know you already said it but I just listed it for completion)

- Diddy Kong Racing DS (some people didn't like it, but I love it)

- GRID

- Asphalt Urban GT 2 (the sequel is a good but not spectacular racer, but the first one isn't very good)

- Speed Racer (like Fzero? this is the closest you'll get. Surprisingly great movie-licensed game)

- Race Driver Create and Race

Trackmania is also set to be good.
