nope only if they would exceed 60+ degree celsius but that would be a rare case

EDIT: i got confused with sata ssd so m.2 and nvme both would profit from a heat sink and sata ssd doesnt need one

Are these heatsinks uniform (i.e. I could use the heatsink from my dead ssd on the new one)?

If your SSDs are of the same size, yeh, just yank the old one off.

It's probably best to consider one for an M.2, just make sure your motherboard does not already have one first.

Also whatever you do DO NOT remove the sticker/label on your M.2 as that is a type of thermal spreader on a lot of them. If you remove it at worst you could hinder heat spread causing more issues and at best it voids the warranty of the M.2 if you need to get it warranty exchanged/recovered from the company that makes them. M.2 Heatsinks work with these without issue.
