Animal Crossing for the GameCube has been decompiled

Another monumental fan effort has been achieved. The team behind the Animal Crossing decompilation have reached 100% progress on recreating the game's code. This isn't a full 100%, as noted by project creator Cuyler, who states that there's still work left to do, but it means Animal Crossing for the GameCube can be modded fully, and soon ported to other platforms, once released. Additionally, the same team has been working on backporting and translating content from the Japanese-exclusive Dobutsu no Mori e+ into a project called Animal Crossing Deluxe.

It's my pleasure to announce that as of <t:1750082820:R>, Animal Crossing's [decompilation](https://github.com/ACreTeam/ac-decomp) hit 100% matching and linked game code. While not fully 100%, the way the game is set up means that we can fully mod the game. There's still some work to do on supporting libraries like the GameCube SDK, among others. However, this does not impact modding. **HUGE** shoutout to everyone who contributed and supported the project along the way! This has been 2.5 years in the making! I'll have a more fitting announcement when we hit complete 100% in the future!

It's nice news, I guess, but has anything new and exciting emerged from any of these recent decompilations, aside from SM64 and Zelda: OoT/Majora's Mask?

Not to disparage the hard work of the people involved, but I'm starting to think that maybe these decompilations are not as easy to work with as initially anticipated.

Depends what you class as new and exciting? outside of Nintendo stuff GTA 3 got ported to the Dreamcast, Sonic Unleashed got ported to the PC and XenonRecomp opens the door for some nice Xbox 360 ports to other platforms in the future.

How many past ones have?
Super Mario 64 is a big one, it's literally on anything. My go-to version is the 3DS port. It just feels so good to play. I prefer playing the 3DS port on Android in an emulator, over the native Android port. Star Fox 64 and Perfect Dark have also been done, as well as both Zelda 64 titles too.

Oh this is gonna be amazing for mods.
Looking forward to a first person mode with a working sky or something odd like that.
Lots of modding potential while keeping the old style.
At the very least mod back in the Japan exclusive scenes that always get removed for some strange reason.

A lot of this sort of thing seems to be about "opening doors in the future", but the future seems a long way off...

I'm starting to think there's only a limited number of people with the necessary expertise to do stuff with these decompilations, and that their time is limited. (Where will new people come from..? Is it all downhill from here?)

AI will help. Once you have a code base, it can help do the busy work. Not perfect of course, but better than nothing.

In the case of XenonRecomp, that's why Sonic Unleashed has a PC port you can play right now, so you could argue the future is already here and will only get better. It won't happen over night as you mention though.

I suspect the people with the skillset required for projects like this are probably also working pretty good jobs, so porting / reverse engineering something outside of that is done as a hobby.

Dolphin is a good example, that was originally a closed source emulator that really came in to its own when the source was released for all to contribute to.

There's already an English patch for animal forest on the N64, and it's pretty good tbh.
That is a broken/unfinished patch.
Game crashes with a few in-game days.
As of now, there are no fully-working translations of Animal Forest for the N64.
