I just bought my very first… how to call it… Anbernic Android handheld(?)
I’ve always liked the idea of all those retro handhelds out there, but I was pretty satisfied with the Switch and never really felt the need to get one. That changed when I saw the Anbernic RG406V, which is heavily inspired by the Game Boy, just with good controls, Hall sticks, and overall solid build quality. It even runs most PS2/GC games.
Now they’ve announced the follow-up. You can see it in the naming of the system: the “7” at the end marks the 7th generation. That means the device is much more powerful and is supposed to handle every GC/PS2 game without issues. For example, F-Zero GX and God of War 2 were problematic before and had frame dips bad enough to kill the fun.
What seems most interesting to me, besides the hardware bump, is the 120 Hz screen. That allows for black frame insertion and is said to massively improve perceived image quality. The RG406V already had a very good screen, but this one seems to be even better.
I have not seen any price range yet, but I’m guessing it will be around $300. I still consider most of these handhelds kind of unnecessary, but the vertical ones are pretty cool. The 4:3 screen is great for older games that use that aspect ratio, and most Android games even render correctly on it.
