Note: I know some of this may be plagiarised from a few gbatemp members, but i thought it might be nice to have it all in one thread.

...........and yes. my alias is rednax

Ok. You have an r4. this is how to use it.

    1. put your MicroSD into your microsd card reader and plug it into your pc.

    2. download the latest software update from ww.r4ds.com

    3. copy the files onto your microsd

    4. Next lets go into USING your games. download whatever rom you want online and then extract the .nds file into your usb (lets just call it that for the moment) rename the file to its real name (not those random indf-sd stuff, the real name of the game).

    5. take out your microsd and plug it into the back of your r4 ds card.

    6. start up the ds, dont do anything as the r4 should boot itself. VIOLA! it works.

    7. press a on the menu and go into games. move down to your game and press a. it should say wether or not to create a save file. say yes (well duh)

    8. IT RUNS! WOOP! so now you want to know how to put cheats on it? weelllll

    Cheats (action replay):

The r4 has a built in action replay (well not really but it runs the codes in the same format as action replay) and this will show you how to use them. Action Replay codes can be found easily enough. just google your game and add action replay codes to the end of it e.g pokemon diamond action replay codes

    1. download cheat code editor if you havent got it already (from the software disc that comes with it) link: <a href="http://r4ds.cn/download/Cheat-code-editor-en-v1.01.rar" target="_blank">r4cheatcodeeditorenglish</a>

    2. Open it up and marvel at its seemingly endless amounts of buttons. XD. lol. ok so if you want to put cheats on a specific game here is what to do:

    1. click file, open database and find the file usercheat.dat in your microusb reader and open it.

    2. click on the little icon at the top of the screen that looks like a ds with a green tick in front of it

    3. It should come up with a windows explorer extension thing on the right with a ds picture and a line that says: input game name here, it should also come up on the right with game name and game id. if it came up then good. if not then ur pc is totally screwed. OK name the game you want to put cheats on

    4. Game ID. This kinda confuse me the first time i heard how it works but i got it so ill tell you anyway. The game id is well an identification of the specific rom you are using that tags it for the code the action replay is going to use. how do we find out what the game id is? well what are you looking at me for i dont have the answer (rollseyes). lol. anyway. near the icon from the add nds thing is a little pic of a binocular. click on it. then find your rom (the one your putting cheats on ) from wherever on your pc and click open. it will come up with that games id. highlight it and copy it onto the game id thing. easy

    5. Adding the cheat. Ok so we have your game added, we know its name and its id. lets add those cheats! NOTE: if you want action replay

Near that green tick ds icon there is a little folder. to the left is another icon with a green tick. click on it. Ok you know the drill (love that saying <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />). Name your cheat e.g inifnite health etc. then put in your instructions on how to use the cheat (as in if you have to press select ingame or more specific stuff). Now copy and paste your action replay code into the cheat code box and click update code on the top right hand corner of the box. great.

    6. Saving. Now click file. save cheat database and BOOM! save as usercheat.dat in your usbcard.

    7. take it out and boot up your ds. find your game and press (y). it should come up with a list (if you have moe than one) of all your cheats. click on enable on the bottom screen ( touch it with your stylus. and press a on the top screen for your cheat. now touch save and exit on the bottom. now if your cheat doesnt work its just a dud cheat. and put something different on and try again.

Playing GBC games on your r4:

Yes its possible. and not that complicated.

    1. download <a href="http://gbatemp.net/index.php?download=780" target="_blank">lameboy</a>

    2. download this file: <a href="http://chishm.drunkencoders.com/DLDI/downloads/dlditool-win32-gui.zip" target="_blank">NDSpatcher</a>

and extract the contents into a folder on your desktop

    3. also download this: <a href="http://chishm.drunkencoders.com/DLDI/downloads/r4tf.dldi" target="_blank">R4dldipatchtool </a> and put it into your dlditool folder

    4. run dlditool32.exe from that folder

    5. where it says dldi file click on the box with the .... inside it that is beside dldifile

    6. find the r4tf.dldi file and then click ok

    7. in binaries click on the other box with the ......'s in it and find the lameboy.nds file

    8. click patch. it should come up saying patch successful. yay!

    9. put lameboy.nds into your usbcardreader. as well as your games e.g pokemon crystal.gbc

    10. take it out and boot up your ds. open up lameboy.nds and it should come up with a black screen and your folders and gbc files. move your arrow down to your game and press a. 'YAY IT WORKS!' THE FAT PROGRAMMER SCREAMS AS HE EAGERLY MASHES THE BUTTONS WHILE STARTING UP HIS FAVOURITE MARIO GAME. lol. now controls.

    11. controls: the only thing you really need to know is that x is save. L is speed up the game (8x faster) and press L+R to go back to the black screen

Note: i have had some problems with saving b4 so save via x then save via the games ingame save option. then repeat once.

    GBA Games:

yes i know i know. its not possible to run gba games in a slot-1 flash card they say. for those of you who have been sick of answering that piss annoying question: can 'flash card' run .gba roms? HERE IS YOUR ANSWER! just copy this to any NOOB who asks again and WOO. scroll down to see how i do it.

no LOL. you need a flash card. ie ez flash 3 in 1. I am not sure exactly how to make it work with an r4 but im assuming that it is extremely simple if you read most of the nds guide. so ill leave it out. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> this section was mostly for a joke.

    Ysmenu:

O god. i hate yasu <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="mad.gif" /> hes a lazy japanese guy. But i cannot deny, he is a VERY good programmer (hacker, modder whatever). but his site is a bit hard to navigate......(japanese duh) so i took the time and effort to edit a certain tut on r4sauto <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smileipb2.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":creep:" border="0" alt="smileipb2.png" /> lol again pologise for anyones post i may or may NOT have copied, but its good to have it all under one post hey?

    R4Sauto:

R4Sauto is a batch file that will auto extract Yasumenu (downloaded <a href="http://home.usay.jp/pc/etc/nds/" target="_blank">HERE</a> , just press alt+ f4 and search for YSmenu and download) and basically make your life a hell of a lot easier by setting it up for you.

    Download this: <a href="http://hbdb.masterwanker.nl/YSMenu/002/r4ysauto.zip" target="_blank">R4Sauto</a>

    instructions:

This is a very easy thing to do, but since i am almost copying anothers thread i will attempt to make a guide just so i can use as an excuse when the moderator starts accusing <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wtf.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wtf:" border="0" alt="wtf.gif" />

    1. download (note: it does not come with windows vista premium, so if you have vista this is where to download: <a href="http://hbdb.masterwanker.nl/YSMenu/002/r4ysauto.zip" target="_blank"> R4Sauto</a>

    2. I am assuming you have ysmenu and have xtracted it to a folder on your desktop <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> , so extract r4sauto into that same folder

3.great. windows didnt blow up in your face yet so u obviously know your stuff <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> run: r4.bat file and type in en and press eneter

    4. now type r4 and press enter (unless...... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ph34r.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="ph34r.gif" /> your an m3 spy of course, but then ull be dissapointed to know that i didnt write this for M3)

    5. it will say generating neccessary files. now windows vista shop has a problem with this part, it will come up with a very strange windows error box like so:
    <img src="http://www.ahajokes.com/cartoon/bmw.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    6. if your past that 'error', press enter to continue on the bat file. it will then say a skin was found yadyada do you want to use this skin? YES! type yes and press enter

    7. ok you have a choice of languages here:

    English
    French
    Dutch
    Japanese
    German
    Spanish

somebody screwed up the 'name' for the different languages so the only ones that are compatible are english, french, spanish and japanese
    labelled as so:
    EN
    FR
    SP
    JA
type anyone of those four languages above and then press enter (note: if this is confusing you type in en cause u can obviously read english <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wtf.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wtf:" border="0" alt="wtf.gif" />)

    8. ok you are displayed with a list of options
1: is a total wipe of moonshl and r4 altogether
    2. will auto start when u load the r4 (kinda like option 1, cause u wont be able to USE the r4's options)
    3. replaces moonshl (u cant use moonshl anymore to watch movies and look at your files in moonshl format, it use the middle button
    4. as a normal .nds file (i use this option cause it enables you to use ysmenu as you wish)
you type in whatever number you want and press enter

    9. ok it will create your ysmenu files automatically based on your choices, now press enter and it should come up with your files in winrar. xtract it to your microsd card as-is and then run on your ds. ENJOY! hope i didnt cause windows to blow up <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/evil.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="evil.gif" />

    Credits:
That guy who posted r4sauto in the sticky (cant remember your name)
Gbatemp- giving me something to do while waiting for my roms to finish downloading
Nintendo- for being nintendo and releasing such an addicting console
    Yasu- even though i hate you <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="mad.gif" /> I like your work <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yaynds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yayds:" border="0" alt="yaynds.gif" />
Helpful people- yes they are out there, the people i want to thank are the people that have answered my previous posts, all 6 of em i think <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

This guide is merely a starting point for what you can do on your r4. I remember when i first got mine i was really excited cause id waited about 3 months for it, only to discover that i would get it later than christmas cause my step dad had forgot to bring it with us on our trip to sydney. i was so bummed. but when i did get it, my friend had already put the software on the r4. unfortunately what i didnt count on was the fact that i had no idea what to do with it. I didnt know how to do anything. and it took me about a week to figure out how to do all these things.
So this is aimed at those people who have no idea what to do with an r4 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> also known as newbs, but that wouldnt be polite to say that would it?

i hate him cause i spent about three hours every day for a week trying to put ysmenu on my ds. he has no guides on his site (other than japanese) to putting the ysmenu onto a flashcard to my knowledge. dont think im trying to be racist, i love japan, its culture and nintendo [IMG]. I just think that it would have required a little effort on his part to make it a LOT easier to understand and use. [IMG] . im not trying to be racist at all, and i do certainly respect him, almost as much as dark_alex (hes still better tho) but i dont like him as a person. as for him being gay, well i admit that was uncalled for. sorry yasu

    how so da_head?
o and inuyasha, that ysmenu sticky guide is absolutely way beyond my comprehension as an r4 user [IMG] nah i just thought that it would be a bit complicated for a new user. and for someone who just got a computer and had an r4 then this r4sauto guide i have here is perfect for them. as i said, its a starter guide.

meh i didnt really remember that sticky....lol. but even so, this might be helpful to a few people so im not going to delete it. i dont care if that sticky has a way to answer some of these questions. Since u pointed out that sticky i might expand on some of the questions in there. e.g an in-depth guide to r4 commander. im not trying to steal any work, im just trying to relieve some of the effort of finding a tut. And what im trying to do with this guide is basically an in-depth guide for someone who might not have a clue on how to use an r4. i cannot stress IN-DEPTH more.
