Okay what the hell is going on here?

Facepunch apparently secretly put in spyware on GMod's latest update and then later on updated their EULA to state that to not get their asses sued.

Any clue on what's going on?

There is no reason. It's Randomizer. He's the literal definition of "Old man yells at clouds".

Anyway the thread you posted already has Garry's response

Pretty cut and dry really. If you're not aware, basically every game these days tracks analytics for things related to the game. Hell, most track a lot more. Especially online games. it's a non-issue, as it always is. No one gives a shit about you or your data, just the useful bits that help them improve the game. Nothing has changed. The EULA didn't change to reflect this either, it just states not to be a piece of shit in chat or you'll get banned. Pretty simple too.

Tracking communications isn't "cut and dry". In that same thread, someone mentioned a data request per GDPR and garry replied that the data is anonymized, however that can't be true because if they're tracking communications and have the ability to ban you, that means that they know your account and can determine your identity from the messages you send (like if you tell someone in game your real name and address). Also, who the hell knows what gameanalytics, a third party, is doing with that data?

This is like two weeks old by now, but I'm wondering if there have been any updates on the issue because this does seem like a legitimate violation of GDPR. They should consult a lawyer if they haven't already before an EU citizen reports them to a DPA.
