Can't we all just get allong?

I'll probably make more use of the report button now, and I hope others will too.
Community help is the only way to keep the baddies out.

I'll look forward to the 5 year anneversary.

Sorry if I missed something, I skipped the second last page, but what happened on February 14th? That's my birthday!

Being thirteen myself, I know exactly what you're talking about, and I could swear there was some sort of legality where you HAD to be 13+. Just remember, not all of us kids are douche bags!

And I always say, well most of the time anyway, if you ain't got nothin' to contribute, don't bother posting. *Done*

Its a shame that the mods have seen fit to, rightfully, issue this statement. GBAtemp is a very friendly forum and I think a lot of the charm is down to not having some overbearing ass-hat with an itchy ban hammer watching over you. I hope that never changes.

Therefore, I accept my duty as a forum user and I'll be using the report button whenever it's needed

(edit) unless I've contributed to the problem somehow...

Is there a specific section that seems worst hit by the flaming/trolling?

IMHO this whole "Rick Roll" crap contributed a lot to this. I mean, how can someone stay calm when his browser just got hijacked by some braindead idiot who posted a link to a site with a Java Script that moves his browser constantly, opens hundred of message boxes with an annoying video playing on top of that all? How is this funny?

Made me install NoScript. Which I avoided until that incident, since I have adblock installed anyways.

I'll let you guys in on a little secret:

Some of the people who are perceived as being part of the problem, I actually really enjoy. I don't generally refer to them with a derogatory name, I call them "the cranks". Often, while certainly being a bit harsh, they cut through the bullshit present in any given topic, and serve to wipe the slate and actually get a careening topic back where it's supposed to be.

What I'm trying to say is, there is a gray area, and some of the "trolls" are actually useful to the site. However, those same people are the ones who have, in my view, the most responsibility to police themselves, to not go too far, to know when to stop.

I'm a big believer in microcosms and macrocosms. This community, like any community, would be dull without the smart-asses and the jokers, and the cranky old men telling you to get off their lawns. The problem I've been having lately with some people, is that while obviously intelligent, they aren't using that intelligence to know when they are dipping into the petty. The petty crap that ruins a thread, the back and forth for no reason that goes on for pages, that's what gets my goat.

I hate to see someone misuse their rapier wit, I just hate it. There is one such person that is very prominent on the board of late, and it just burns me up that they are wasting themselves on petty pissing contests, and contracting warnings at a rate that will eventually result in their shutdown.

I'd elaborate further, but I'm belaboring my point a bit already, plus I have to get my son ready for school. TTFN

That's exactly how I feel, sometimes.
Some people are very smart (kellyan95 is one of them) and instead of producing constructive answers, they'll just act like jerks and stir up trouble by posting short annoying messages.
Although I was the one who originally started a topic about the issue in the staff forum, I really appreciate that you, mthrnite, took a step forward and posted this topic.

I hope this message will be strong enough to remind our members that we are a community with our very own identity, our very own policy, and our very own rules.
Thank you everyone!

Second that.

I rarely comment in the forums cause alot of the post are flaming (it also makes it harder to read long threads ). I think that confronting a community with its flaws is a good thing (cause most people are smart and do not intend to cause any troubles) and that this post can be a very possitive thing to this community ( provided further action wil be taken as well).

Now, I've done my fair share of flaming - as it's all fun and games until someone gets banned - but how about a slashdot-like karma system?
The petty bullshit still remains but only the bored at work/flamers/nolifers get to see it because you actually have to choose to view "bad karma" posts, and the stuff that matters, the actual posts that helped people out, gets promoted by the silent majority.

Well, that's just one example I know of that works pretty well!

Or, just ban every american poster from the site

Its a nice system but one of its downsides is that some informative posts get lost that way

.

Anyway the last joke really has no place in a disscussion of this sort

You could add flame section in 'Other Discussions' called something like Anger Management? Where people try and out wit each other ultimately leading to one victor, whilst leaving the lesser trolls licking their wounds.

Good post mthrnite, I agree with you 100%

I think that new members should only be allowed to see certain parts of the forum and then after say maybe a month get access to the rest of the board.
Yeah, that may be a good idea, as long as they don't have very limited access, because then no new members would bother to use the forums.
EDIT: Read-only access would be a great idea though

EDIT2: Hitto: That's a really great idea, I hope the admins consider it

Throwing in my approval for a vip board. I am nobody special but I have been around a while and would appreciate somewhere away from the chaos of the general boards.

I hope rickrolling newbs that are asking why roms aren't dumped yet is not grounds to be moderated on
ph34r.gif

Or ya know, you could just remind them that it's against board rules. I realize that a lot of people are going to sign up here and not read the rules. Maybe a quiz would help? That way at least they would know. Or we could stick the way we are and just moderate as it comes a long. Just a thought.

Actually I think the better bet would be to not reply ANYTHING cause this bumps the topic which then results in like 9 people also replying "OMG you shouldn't post "First" cause you will get banned." .... sure I see this as post count fluffer but if we are really to cut back on it...then anyone who post "First" and anyone who replies "edit your post quick cause you will get a warning" should get a warning increase. To eliminate bull shit one should just report someone for breaking the rules.
"Where are the roms?"
