My friend was talking to me about the 3DS and its viewing angle and compared it to a toshiba prototype laptop that will be coming out with glassless 3D. He says it works with the front camera and uses head tracking. He thinks nintendo will eventually come out with a new 3ds model or provide software for the current 3DS to be able to get rid of the viewing angle problem by using headtracking (or facetracking) with the front camera along with stereoscopic imaging. Would this even be possible with the 3DS?

This is the video he showed me (the head tracking part is in the 2nd half): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYcg_8ziiew

it is possible. but at a cost.

how much more would it cost?? Wasn't there a game on the DSi that used head tracking so you can view the image at different angles? I mean I could be wrong about all of this but seems possible Nintendo would do that. 1st gen 3ds, hard to view. 2nd gen (or 3rd), perfect any angle viewing.

Thats really nice! Sharp is producing the 3DS LCDs, right? Hopefully they are having something like this in the pipelines.

Well the tvs mentioned in the video are a new type of display but the 2nd half shows the laptop and how the camera does headtrack, so its just a webcam with software?? Dont know if its a whole new type of lcd. This would be awesome on a future revision of the 3ds. Hope nintendo does this and not other companies... ::cough, cough:: sony!

I guess headtracking would cost quite some battery life. Not worth it on a device that hardly has any battery life anyway.

I had an idea like this for TVs, but the problem with TVs is more often than not more than one person watches tv at once and the tv would not be able to produce a perfect 3D image for both people.
-edit
But I did vow not to buy another laptop until I get one with a 3D screen

providing they come within the next 5 years..

That's just the headtracking part, but you need an active parallax barrier (that sends a different image to each eye), and that is pretty expensive and power-hungry.

the 3ds already has a parallax barrier.

you need one that can actually move its sweet spot around...

Note the "active" in the "active parallax barrier". Otherwise it can't adjust where the sweet spot would be.

They would never make a new model with this. People complain about the battery too much as it is, and this would only make it worse.

It's too much work to fix a minor problem. I have no problem finding/staying in "The sweet spot".

i still think they'll add head tracking in a future model with just the front camera (software only) to correct the viewing angle or even possible add it through a firmware update. Check this out.. and btw, i dont have a viewing problem at all with my 3ds, just for information only.

That is just rendered 3D objects and adjusted according to the viewing position. The DSi can do this as well.
It is cool, but it is not "real" 3D as in 3DS, 3D TV or 3D Cinema.

What the 3DS does, is send out two different images so your brain creates the illusion of "real" 3D, like you have in reality with two eyes.
iPad and DSi (or every other normal screen for that matter) only have one image for both eyes, so they can render 3D, but cannot display it in "real" 3D.

Nevertheless, it would be cool to have some 3DS software that implements a good use of head tracking to look "around" 3D objects. But as mentioned before, to not loose the "real"-3D effect (the sweet spot), advanced hardware would be needed. (3DS Advance anyone??=)
