Is there a update to the recent firmware? i can never tell because they never label the updated with dates or anything.

There doesn't need to be an update - apparently Nintendo gave up on blocking it. The latest firmware will work on all firmwares.

Yeah, Nintendo threw in the DS cart towel since the DS was no longer their cash cow. 1.4.5 was the last DSi update, and I think somewhere in the 6.x firmwares was when they stopped blocking the DS carts in the 3DS firmware.
