Out of curiosity, let's say you swap the shells of a e.g. black 3ds xl with a majora's mask 3ds xl. Is there any actual hardware difference between the two? And if I were to give both of these to somebody and said they were swapped and asked them to prove it, even with the use of homebrew apps, would you be able to find out.

tldr do special edition nintendo systems have a way to identify whether they're special edition or not without simply looking at the box/shell. I'm asking as I want to buy one but also don't wanna get scammed

Some of the special edition consoles came with IPS screens which some people prefer.
Serial number, readable with homebrew software, might be a way to identify them, but I don't know if there are known ranges for the specials. Nintendo should know.

That said I never cared for special editions and/or IPS much. They all play the same games.

Good luck and have fun!

the charging ports of special editions tend to have more solder than regular 3dses, and special editions can have different colors and numbers of screws.

Also, the solder mask of the motherboard varies from console to console, but i dont think that's associated with the edition or model.

I'll be ordering the Japanese copy of FFX + FFX-2 from there as well soon, as you get both games on cartridge instead of 1 game with a download code.
