Probably Will Not Happen

Nintendo has no current plans to release a 3DS Lite. Hardware designer Kenichi Sugino says that they have used all of the tricks learnt from designing the NDS to make the 3DS as small as possible. As new technologies are discovered it is possible that a new design could be released. For now it seems like we should not get our hopes up.

That's why we don't have any short-term plans for creating a more compact version of Nintendo 3DS like we did with Nintendo DS Lite.

That doesn't mean they won't in the future, nor does it mean there won't be a revision of some sort at some point down the road (which there almost surely will be, even if it's not intended to be smaller or whatever). And i'd have to say this- if they actually told people what their plans were for future versions, that would likely eat into their profits for this system. Some people would wait for a future revision instead of buying the current one. Heck, i've seen topics on various message boards that people were waiting for a revision even without confirmation that there will be one (it's just THAT inevitable with Nintendo handhelds). That's one reason why they didn't tell anyone about the 3DS when they were so busy hyping the DSi and DSi XL. They don't want to destroy their profits.

And why would we believe that they got this stuff figured out after the DS, when they didn't get it after any other cycle of their handheld products? GB had GBpocket then Color (plus the backlit GBLite in Japan), GBA had SP then Micro and SP2, DS had Lite then i then iXL. Come on, if anything they're only getting worse about it as they learn more in each generation.

If they had any plan, of course they will not tell. Anyway the may not shrink the 3DS, but expand (3DS XXL?).

I'm pretty sure the Color is different from the normal one too much to be called a revision. And I've never heard about the SP2 o.0

OT: I'm getting a launch one anyway, so don't really care. Maybe the people who are going "I'll wait for the lite" will preorder one now, but probably not.

Obviously they're saying this so people don't wait, and buy this at launch instead. My theory is that they make the first one as ugly as they can so people have a reason to buy the sexier revision as well, even though they both basically do the same thing.

They'll probably release the 3DS2 in 2 years with the major selling points of a longer lasting battery, better camera, and sleeker design. I'll be damned if I give in and buy both.

It would be the most stupid marketing if they would say "Yes, we have plans to release a better Version of the 3DS in 2 years...so people wanting a LITE Version just wait till than". For sure they will deny any plans regarding those things.

I don't care if they're not announcing their plan. I don't care if they're not planning. I'm waiting until the 3DS rehash comes out, even if it takes 4+ years.

EDIT: Reread the OP, and it seems that what they're saying is they're not releasing a "smaller and slimmer" version. That doesn't mean they're not making a rehash, it just means they're not making a 3DS micro (or equivalent).

Nintendo's trying to point out that the 3DS is already the size they want it to be, and don't plan on making it smaller. All this means for us is that the rehash will be of an identical or larger size than the regular 3DS.

Hmm... Maybe you're right. 3DS don't have much colors to choose, just red, aqua blue, and black. 3DS also need a better battery, because of the cool graphics and more.

@everyone else: I'm actually waiting for the next 3DS revision because of the miserable battery life. I don't own a PSP (which has fairly equivalent life), so I don't know if I'd be able to live with it.

EDIT: I'm going to sleep (it's 2:30 AM where I live). If I see more mislead people when I get up, then I'm going to try to get the OP revised or something.

This will be the first time I won't buy a new Nintendo handheld at launch. I forgive them for the DS Phat, I didn't hate it but I loved my DS Lite so much more.

But this 3DS seriously needs a makeover.

I have had PSPs since the olden days of the 1000s, and I promise you, it's not that bad...

even though it SAYS 5:03 hours left, I usually get at least two more out of it...

Remember dude, its ESTIMATED. An average of running different games with different parts and different proccessing needed. It varies but to my experiences with handhelds (all the way back to the original Game Boy days) I ALWAYS got more than the estimated time.

I say just get the first one, dude. I understand your logic but my experienced differ.

i think the major problems tht ppl had with the ds phat was tht it was kinda ugly hence the lite. The DSi added some features so unless the 3ds adds some features (i cant imagine what) then a new revision is expected (from me)
