During a GDC Online interview with Epic Games VP Mark Rein, the conversation moved from 3D games to handhelds (specifically, the very impressive Epic Citadel iOS demo). Naturally, I then took the opportunity to ask about a current hot topic that combines both subjects: the Nintendo 3DS. Is Epic working on 3DS software?

"No," Rein said. "It's below our [minimum specifications], from what we can tell. We don't have a 3DS, so there's no way for us to verify that," he added, "but everything we've been led to believe is that it's below our min-spec. You couldn't do a game that looks like [Epic Citadel] on it, for example."

He clarified that this means no plans for Epic games, as well as no plans for a version of Unreal Engine for other devs to use. " Like I said, we really don't know enough about it to make a formal comment, but I think if they considered that our engine would be good on it, they would have probably talked to us about it."

As Rein himself noted, the situation could change when Epic gets its own 3DS to experiment with -- but at least for now, upon first impression, the developer apparently considers the new device less capable than last year's iPhone 3GS, since that can run Epic Citadel just fine.[/p]

does it really need Unreal Engine? how about CryEngine?

I read about this and it's basically the biggest pile of crap I've ever heard. The 3DS is much more powerful than the iPhone 3GS and, if the 3DS can run titles like Resident Evil Degeneration and Samurai Warriors Chronicle, there's no reason why it couldn't do everything the 3GS can do. Including run the Unreal Engine. As a lot of people say, that Rein guy is just a Nintendo hater for some reason. I bet if Cliffy were asked if the 3DS could run the Unreal Engine, he'd cry to the heavens that it could and that Gears of War 3D would be on the console if it wasn't for contractual obligations.

...Says the man who doesn't have a dev kit or specs for the system.

No seriously. This is barely news. Developers not working on the 3DS know just as much about it as we do. All this is is some random guy saying "it's probably not powerful enough." A mod should change the title to "Some guy doesn't think the 3DS can run Unreal Engine"

The man works on iOS games. He hasn't been bought out by Gates and Co.

Well, if they don't want to make games that'll sell, they can feel free not to develop for the 3DS.

Doesn't change the fact this guy is talking out of his ass, though. He makes claims about the specs when they don't even have one?

he's just sayin stuff from sources that aren't even legit, (ign maybe lmao!) yea he needs to get his ass a 3DS before he can say stuff. Cause speculating will only make you look like a dumbass at the end.

Let me guess.....it's some kind of FPS gaming engine, right? Gee, like we don't have enough of that genre to last a lifetime. [IMG]

It just sounds like he's too lazy to port the engine over and is making up a lame excuse. He probably feels that Unreal Engine games won't sell well on the 3DS. Really though I have no clue how games are gonna sell on it and if "hardcore" will do well, seeing the disproportionate sales of casual vs. hardcore games on Nintendo's last set of systems.

Basically it was just a bullshit way of saying "We don't want to put Unreal Engine on 3DS".

Does epic make anything that would be worth the 3ds's time anyway?

Gears of War, for one thing. And a hell of a lot of other games use the Unreal Engine. Though they're mostly shooters.

Edit: Please don't do that. "If you can't have it, convince yourself you don't need it." That's not a good philosophy.

Gears of War is Microsoft's property though, they'll be throwing that one out to other systems over their dead bodies.

Here's some notable Unreal Engine 3 games:

    - Army of Two (both games)
    - Batman: Arkham Asylum/City
    - BioShock Infinite (BioShock and BioShock II run on 2-2.5)
    - Borderlands
    - Bulletstorm
    - Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
    - Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2
    - Mirror's Edge
    - Mortal Kombat (2011 game)
    - Shadow Complex
    - Singularity
    - TC's Rainbow Six Vegas (both games)
    - Unreal Tournament 3 (duh)

And some Unreal Engine 2/2.5 games:

    - APB
    - BioShock (both games)
    - Duke Nukem Forever
    - TC's Splinter Cell (all games)
    - Unreal Championship (and 2)
    - Unreal Tournament '03/'04
    - XIII

If they don't want to jump on the 3ds bandwagon, that's their choice that will reflect future business in gaming.

This is just speculation. When he gets his hands on one then we'll have a definitive answer lol. A portable Borderlands would be great [IMG]

Of course not. We need our generic FPS #1231231343569 rehash with nothing added to the table on a monthly basis.

We really do, though. Those draw a certain type of gamer, and also may help draw other types of games considered "mature" to the 3DS, which will in turn draw even more people.

Gee. Have you really read the article? He clearly said it WONT run Unreal Engine unless they got their hands on a 3DS on which THEY WILL TRY TO EXPERIMENT.

Let's just wait and see to what happens next

Unlike iOS-enabled devices, a device like the 3DS does not have an intensive OS and multiple programs running in the background, which require the fast processors and large amounts of RAM. Had they thought about this, they wouldn't have made sch a dumb comment, as removing this crap essentially reduces the requirements needed to run their engine.

    Well, who needs UE3?
it's better that it won't be ported to 3DS as epic built the engine for 360. UE3 games ported to ps3 or PC have many texture and frame rate problems because they did an indecent job porting the engine to other platforms. Easily the situation can be even worse on 3DS...
Epic seems to love 360 only, I wonder if it's because of M$ moneyhats [IMG]

I couldn't care less about what Epic thinks about the 3DS. One thing i know for sure, there will be Nintendo games on the 3DS and that's what matters to me.
