I've heard rumors that the 3DS might have html5 or flash, It might be possible since the 3DS doesn't have a browser yet.

Wow. a portable device with htlm5/flash or, even better, java? If so, it's worth getting one just for that, even the iPhone can't handle it...

As I said, its just a rumor, I agree it would have been awesome if it could have all of that.

Sorry, but I couldn't resist myself.

QUOTENetFront, read the source.

and it says 'Javascript' that's not the same java as we use to play games is it?
What about chatrooms?

Okay, here is what I expect. This isn't fact, but pure speculation. My source is my mind for the most part, with small tidbits from already announced info.

First, the facts:
1) The 3DS will use the NetFront browser. What we know about it is it's the same one used by Sony in the PSP, PS3 and many many MANY mobile phones. (But the version Sony uses is horridly out of date.) The current version of the NetFront browser does have HTML5/Flash. The browser is meant for today's phones and mobile devise needs.

2) This summer Netflix streaming will be enabled on the 3DS. This right here is video playback off the internet.

3) Also at some point in the future we will be able to record 3D video with the 3DS.

This is where the speculation begins.

We already have the ability for video streaming/playback coming to the device, and a browser that says right in it's specs it supports video playback. So as long as Nintendo is using this version (or one built off it) we should have video playback from sites like Youtube, Hulu, Dailymotion, etc. At least from Youtube. Also, in the past Youtube experimented a bit (and still supports) 3D videos.

What I see happening is if Youtube doesn't play on the 3DS initially it will later. Not only will Youtube make sure they have something compatible, but they may also work in a way to view these 3D videos on the 3DS in 3D. Same for the upcoming video recording. If it's not in a format that Youtube can read they'll work on making it readable. I wouldn't be surprised if they even did something like how you can upload and post pictures to Facebook on the DSi and have it so you can upload 3D enabled videos to Youtube directly from the 3DS.

That said, just like the Facebook picture thing, these ideas would probably take a while to become a reality, if at all.

My thoughts: (speculation as well!)

Flash sounds possible. Well, support for it at least. The 3DS will never be able to play every flash game out there, but the simple ones might actually work (3DS flash portal, anyone?)

HTML5 - definately possible, but just for simple stuff. I wouldn't expect to see any OpenGL games running on the 3DS.

Java - Highly doubt. Java is very heavy in terms of processing power.

Also, don't mix Java and Javascript - Java is the thing you use to play games etc, Javascript is what opens up a new browser window or things like that. Javascript isn't used to make games.

The 3DS is entirely capable of playing video, it's a planned feature to download 3D movies, trailers and game videos with this.

As for whether or not Youtube becomes an option, is yet to be seen.
Who knows, the photo channel had Facebook integration, maybe Nintendo will be smart and make a 3DSWare for browsing Youtube.

3DS will most probably have a separate app just for browsing and viewing Youtube videos. There's no way it could handle web pages (HTML + CSS + JavaScript with AJAX) and play embedded videos at the same time...

Not necessarily. It could be possible the 3DS could handle a normal webpage like Youtube.
HTML, CSS and AJAX don't really use a lot of resources, and Javascript is rarely active unless activated by a click etc.

I'm expecting a Youtube app or something of the like. It would be weird if Nintendo made a browser with ALL the features in it.

They might as well milk the money out of us if they make an app.

Doesn't Youtube also have a mobile friendly setup for some phones? What about that? My bro-in-law's Blackberry can run video off Youtube using it.
