I have a question (one of many I'm sure) since I'm a bit new to the DS scene. I understand that you need a DS to be able to update all current flashcarts. When will that not be the case? I'm deciding between the DStwo and AK but don't own a DS, so I assume I should wait? Is there a certain update that will come pre-installed eventually (or is it out already) that will let me update and do everything from a 3DS? I'm pretty patient so it's all good.

Acekard 2i's newest shipment has the 3DS compatible bootstrap inside it, so if you get one of those, the time is now.
It's unlikely you will yet though.

After you update using the DS or DSi, you can update from the 3DS (unless you download the firmware update the bootstrap update is trying to bypass).

My acekard works both ways.
Same with the DSi though, there's 1 or 2 pixels blackened around the edge since it's DS mode, not DSi mode.

Safe to assume it's the same for the ds2.

It can be both.

You can run DS games (and DS flash carts) either stretched, or smaller.

If stretched it does not fill the whole screen, there's black bars (since the top screen is widescreen).

Thanks RY ,,is it in settings or what...im grabbing mine in a hour...guess im a bit ancey...lol

No it's not in the settings. It starts them stretched by default and when you hold Start + Select (I think I read only Select is enough but people keep saying Start + Select so I'll go with that) while the DS game is starting it'll be in the original resolution but smaller.

Man, why isn't this stickied? I was THIS close to being a noob and asking some of those questions in a post when I found this. Excellent FAQ Soulsnatcher, thank you.

Nintendo Saids: "RAWR" to flashcards

It's just a scare tactic, this has been in EVERY Nintendo game's EULA since GCN, almost word for word.

Seriosuly, You're the third person to bring this up, and probably about 100 more.
This. Yup, just put my DSTWO in and am waiting for nothing to happen in later updates (except maybe make my flashcarts stop working, but that's what my DSiXL is for).

Yes we can, but noone has yet

There's flashcarts that work on the 3DS, but they all only work in DS mode, so no DSi or 3DS games. Transferring DSiWare to the 3DS will be available with the big update coming in may.

I felt a negative influence from the first line.

I was disappointed.

Great FAQ, though- extremely accurate, why isn't this stickied?
