Part of why that would even happen is because Nintendo are not doing a good enough job of getting Virtual Console titles out there.
Of course they need to get titles re-approved by the ESRB and similar ratings organisations before they can be published, but they often go weeks without releasing a title, and often one at a time.

I mean for gods sakes, I don't care if SNES and Megadrive titles are released for the Wii (and by extension Wii U), the 3DS is the perfect system for these days with the ideal resolution for 1:1 displays and ideal button mapping for all games.
And the portability goes without saying!

All the more true.

More of the problem is that Nintendo do not provide adequate emulation options either.
They do not allow you to remap the buttons, and in the case of NES games they deliberately reduce the image quality, forcing a blurriness and duller, darker colours.
Playing Super Mario Bros with the B and A buttons as they are positioned is not comfortable, and they full well know this with the Y/B button usage in New Super Mario Bros 1 and 2.

I tried to donate $10 but it's complicated for me since I don't live in europe so I can't do a bank transfer and it is too complicated to use a credit card. I decapped a few ICs I had laying around when I had access to a C&C, and I've alway found die design interesting.

Most of the people in that thread seemed pretty interested in this endeavour though, but publically broadcasting intentions like this does invite trouble as you say.

Just wondering but what if someone worked for a company or goes to a university that has access to an SEM? Could that be cheaper than sending it off to an analytical lab?

you need more than just a SEM ,you need a way to decap the chip without damaging it ,and to strip it layer by layer i think

Once everyone who is likely to donate knows about it, and has donated, it will of course stop increasing as rapidly as it was, and instead increase in small bursts. I guess it must have reached that point.
