Sorry in advance for the lengthy post. I have a 3ds (Old no little nubby thing) which has firmware 4.x (ok can’t remember off the top of my head.) and I have a Gateway 3DS which is good (not perfect but good) I have been reading a great deal about Custom Firmware which will let me play my backups and also use emulators and the like. I really want to go to a Custom Firmware but (I’ll be honest here) and terrified of doing it and even after reading lots on the internet and watching loads of YouTube videos I’m still a bit unsure. What I’m looking for is somebody who could do it for me and explain it to be a bit. I live in Carlisle (UK) but would be willing to travel a bit to get it done. If you know of anyone who does this I would be grateful if we could have a chat. Thanks

What's the exact firmware version? If it's the right version you can do it all in software without needing extra game cards etc. I'm completely the wrong end of the county (Cornwall) but happy to help if you want to post it.

Do not be terrified it is extremely easy with a 0.1 percent or less of bricking you are totally safe just don't do something purposefully dumb. AND DO NOT watch anything on YouTube instead Google "plialects guide" and it'll be the first and only one you follow

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way

    For your R4
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
It's old but it's the best firmware out for DS stuff
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
it says it only works for the original R4, R4i Gold (r4ids.cn), R4iDSN (r4idsn.com) and Acekard R.P.G.
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
    nvm it does support mine
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:

Just give it a try, but honestly if you have a 3DS you can play DS games without a card just off the internal SD card
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Slightly slower loading but a bit more convenient
