It'll probably be new software only. A good test drive would be a firmware update that updates the AR games to include a demo/minigame that uses this.

And the 2nd image will involve attaching a conical mirror to the front camera. this essentially moves the interaction range to within an inch from the top screen, enabling closer interactions rather than floating interactions.

however, with the image skewed by the conical mirror... i wonder how accurate it'll be? the image picked up by the camera will be curved... they'll need some serious algorithms for the software to recognize the marker with circular skewing involved. maybe the marker is electronic in nature? light emitting perhaps, so that the camera can pick it up much easier? or some bold color that's easy to recognize even with the grainy image?

Not sure why nobody only ferofax and I noticed, but there's one persistent error in all those sketches.

This add-on makes sense provided that the images pop out of the screen as shown on the concept sketches, which is not the case with 3DS games 99% of the time. The screen allows depth perception, but inwards, not outwards of the screen. That said, images don't "pop out", they rather "indent in".

Why does this matter? If they were to pop out, you could technically "touch" them with the stylus and recieve Force Feedback. If they're indented, you'd have to "pierce the screen" to reach them with the stylus's end.

With all that in mind... this will not work, or will barely work and only if you're exactly in the sweet spot.

What's to stop them from making a 3D pop-out games specially for this this style of play?

3DS is very much so capable of doing pop-put effects a good 3/4 inches out of the screen as I've seen myself. It's up to developers, pop-out effects are very straining on the eyes though. 3D depth is more easy on the eyes and longer gaming time so generally this is preferred.

Read my edited post - I personally didn't experience any pop-out whatsoever while using the 3DS, but then again, I don't play a lot on it so I may not be accustomed with the effect yet.

No problem, no ones really pushed for it as it's not eye friendly.

The dragon fight on the AR games had a awesome pop-out effects of the dragons face. It was literally out of the screen. One of the best 3D pop-out effects I've seen.

I assume this is general knowledge, but i'll say it for clarity's sake. the 3D effect relies heavily on your eyes' capability to see the effect. one picture can seem flat to one person and be extremely popped-up to another. it's just not for everyone, i guess. call it a technological limit, but i think it's more like a personal limit, because the hardware is standardized but each person's eyes are not.

My 3d perception is also not that good i see them in 3d behind the screen. What they could do with the front camera is to disable 3d effect if you are out of angle.

Also, maybe a 3DS owner can shed some light on this, but wouldn't putting your hand in front of the 3D screen disrupt the 3D effect?

Just a query, hopefully someone can answer this.

It just,of course, block the part you are covering. No, it doesn't. At least not for me.

:ninja:,but at least it is confirmation.

Occasionally I try to grab the 3D image, just for giggles. its really good 3D. Sticks out of the screen up to 4 inches or so. can go nice and deep too. I can see this working brilliantly.
3DS will finally have x2 TOUCHSCREENS!

Your finger tip just covers the a part of the image but the rest still appears popped out.If one tries piercing the image with his fingers it gets really confusing for the brain.

Seems really stupid to me. The Circle Pad Pro was a bad enough peripheral, either build it into the system or don't build it at all. And yes, I would like a 3DS with 2 Circle Pads on it and they could damn well upgrade the camera on a new one, I don't care if it's a bit wider, it's too narrow for adult hands anyway.

Well if this catches on. The games that will be using this will obviously have pop outs rather than just indented backgrounds. And i dont believe they would be able to update current 3ds games to be able to use this ..thingy.
The screen isn't really capable of a lot of pop out, it's just not built that way and it's a recurring issue with many 3DS titles. I don't think they're going to go any further with this before the screen itself gets a make-over.

EDIT: I'm afraid I didn't get to try the plumber game yet, so I can't tell. So far, none of the games I tried on the 3DS really do pop-out, but then again, I don't own one, I only play a bit on my girlfriend's 3DS so maybe my eyes aren't used to this yet.

Mighty Switch Force have particles and other effects nicely jumping out of the screen about 3cm or so and more recently there was a shaun the sheep video about basketball that had the ball flying out of the screen like 5cm, both things have a very good implementation of pop out 3D so check those out if you get hold of a 3DS.
Other than that there are plenty of MPOs out there, many of which you can adjust the amount of pop out by moving the circle pad IIRC.

This patent is perfectly doable but completely unnecessary for most games that aren't mini game compilations or pet simulators, then again you can argue how 3D alone is unnecessary.

Which be honest is for most games, but at least it looks nice and don't hinder gameplay.
Sometimes it's almost essential even because of the expanded field of view and the added depth, for example it's easier for me to dodge in a game like KI when knowing the distance between the targets and my character flying in front of them. (there are no shadows to judge by when in the air.)

I'm a thumb on screen (finger stylus) user so in this game I easily use 3D without losing the sweet spot, holding the system with two hands is so much more comfortable.
That's why playing in 3D using the stylus is one of my main concerns about this patent, it's not comfortable unless you use the awful non portable stand.

Anyway this patent instantly made me think of Wario Ware inc.
Pushing, pulling, swiping and pressing 3D objects is a very cool idea actually, imagine picking a nose with the stylus or using it as chisel.
This game would be a perfect match for this kind of technology. Sadly I don't think it ever will happen because having the ability to see 3D would be an absolute requirement for it to work at all, something Nintendo clearly wants to avoid, just like they want to avoid using 3D for every game on the system, including first party titles.

I have this. ^_^ I took a picture of my fingers aimed at the stereocam, and maxxed the popout. it looks like they stretch for a good 3 inches off the screen, ESPECIALLY if i poke a finger up from the top edge of the top screen to sort of "compare". however, if i obstruct the popout at any point, it gets confusing REALLY FAST.
