you can update using any 6.3 game card (i guess pokemon has 6.1?)

if you are on 4.5 i would not even think updating at all!

Just wondering, I'm still very, very new to the nintendo 3ds hacking scene.

If you guys have the time, is there any significant difference between the two firmwares? My main concern is game comparability, can the 6.3 run more games or something? if not maybe i don't have anyhting to worry about =/

ooh okay well i have a pokemon y legitimate cartriadge so the options is there i guess but if theres no reason to update ill stay put!! :D

yeah there is:

6.3 exploit is userland only and not released yet. So if you use it you can not pirate any game, modify the firmware, use custom designs (if ever possible) and do not do anything kernel relevant at at all! that means.. only basic homebrew (and some advanced homebrew) is possible... its not worth a lot to be honest if you want to see the full capabilities of the 3ds system

4.5 however is capable of doing EVERYTHING system relevant.. you can do everything u want to... but the public information about that exploit is broken at some points.. that means: there's no way to use it right at the moment - except you know what to change ;) Anyway.... i'd stay with 4.5.... maybe when 6.3 develops right you can jump on that traing with all of those restrictions :)

so in short: your question seems to be piracy related... to tell you the truth.. game compatibility on 6.3 will be ZERO (except for original game cards)

Hmm.... I hope you aren't just trolling around. Anyway, The only reason why you should stay on 4.5, is to run back up games with flash card like gateway. Your pokemon game will ask you to update your 3ds on 4.5 without classic mode. otherwise it won't run. so google around for
- 3ds gateway
-3ds backup games
- 3ds flashcard firmware requirement
- classic mode.

good luck

Thank you, that answers quite a few of my questions :). Man I need to do way more research especially about the customizations, didn't even know they were possible!

Edit : why would I toll :( this forums is of great help! Truth is I havent got my 4.5.0 device yet, (in a few days) but I'm not doing anything with gateway untill i have researched the hell out of everything. I'm too scared to otherwise :(

So if I want to play SMTIV on a European 3DS I might as well just get a flashcart? No point waiting on this exploit right?

Why do retail 3DS games require kernel access over userland?

And to be clear: Can you use emunand or "redNAND" with ssspwn?

xD sorry if that sounded offensive but your question was answered all over the forum multiple times. That's why i said that ^^.

Retail games do not have access to kernel. Only to some kernel functions (which could be exploitable). This exploit has them too most likely.
Well there could be a way to play game backup in user land with a hacked game (hacker still needs access to some private kernel funtions). But firmware modification (homebrew channel/region free) can not be done without kernel exploit.

Sorry to ask yet-another-question:

I know it's probably not known yet but.. NAND emulation will not be possible I gather: Does that mean to remain on 4.5 I'll need to alternate between Smea's exploit to run homebrew and Gateway's launcher to play official games and access eshop?

What if Smea was paid by Nintendo to make this exploit
Tons of people would buy tons of 3DSes to run this

This is how I proclaim my disagreement that the exploit is 6.3 only. A just-discovered exploit that been already patched for future firmwares? What the heck

Also, homebrew apps/games like Portal DS and Quake/Doom etc etc are still infringement of copyright which is a close cousin of piracy.

So... the argument for protection from piracy is questionable.

Sure I'd love to see Portal 3DS. Would be fairly cool.

Quake/Doom requires original game files. So it's not.
For Portal, the DS game wasn't a clone of the original, and I doubt the 3DS version (if there will be one) will be as well.

I guess there is a point to be made there about being hypocritical, but he's not harming anything by not charging money for those. If Valve or Notch tried to step in and shut the project down, they'd be no different from these other sleazy companies that shut down fan projects.

IIRC quake and doom engines are open source and usually homebrew projects don't include the game content and assets with downloads. Atleast when I played doom on PSP I had to have my actual wad files. These are, of course, examples of the best homebrew we could home to get on the 3DS with it's current gimped state.

Ah, so this wouldn't allow ported emulators to run either (emulators are not illegal under US copyright law as hardware cannot be copyrighted), unless they contained a BIOS file you didn't dump yourself (like PSX, Dreamcast, Saturn, etc). So yeah, no ported emulators, like, at all. Interesting. Running Quake, Portal, and Doom DS is probably all you'd be able to run, huh, guess 3DS hacking will be severely crippled. That's pretty disappointing actually.

Seriously? I was really hoping for a better snes emulator and a virtual boy one too. Better not return the 4.5 3ds I just bought then.

Don't take my word for it, I'm just assuming that it'll be limited to useless apps and not emulators for old school systems, I'm likely wrong :P I hope emulators can be run for Snes since Nintendo will never write one for the 3DS themselves, but I ain't gonna hold my breath.
