3D Model Program used for Games?

Depends on the game engine... but models are simply vertex data along with some info on which texture goes where, so you can find all sorts of converters, and can often get import/export plugins for "universal" modelers like Blender.

An issue is the "rigging" and skeletal animation of the models... for this you often need to use a program that ties closely into the engine you're using, as these are often engine-specific and can't be easily converted.

So it really does depend on the game engine. You could probably open up five different Wii games and find models in five different formats. There's no imposed standard.

I went to school for computer animation and they all seemed to say that Maya was pretty much standard for everything, sadly they only started offering game design as a class after i had graduated, so as far as game engines go... I can't say for sure. I'd say the top programs used for modelling are Maya, 3D StudioMax, SoftImage, and maybe Lighwave
