Hardware 3.5mm Headphone Jack wiring problem

So my computer speakers are messing up, when the wire gets wiggled it goes from stereo to mono, I'm sure you've all had that problem with headphones before. So I try replacing the jack with a jack from some old headphones I had lying around and it's extremely quiet. What am I doing wrong?

IIRC (I'm not an expert in the field) its quiet because not enough signal gets through. Increase the contact area for the wire to reduce resistance and get more signal to go through.

Apparently that extra wiring in there not boated in black or white is actually there for a reason. I've always ignored it when splicing wires but I guess signal travels through it too. Can anyone explain it?
