On nintendo's japan page i read "Wii will improve the ability to read the disk". Wondering if it refers to noises from the DVD drive everyone's talking about (they happen with retail games, even without Backup Loaders)

New Wii Terms of Service Vexes Hackers
by Blake Grundman | 11/18/08 | 5:21 AM PST

As you can see in the screenshot at right, it looks like Nintendo is going to be cracking down on homebrew development in a big way. This adjustment to the terms of service will allow Nintendo to not only remove full channels from the Wii memory, this could also put your saved games in jeopardy. No word yet on if this will result in your Twilight Princess saved game getting pooched.

In further terms of service updates, Nintendo changed the terms of services on their website to reflect the new found ability to modify/update the Wii's firmware without the user's permission or notification.

Before:
"To ensure that your Wii Console is operating properly and efficiently, we may download updates, patches, upgrades and similar software to your Wii Console. In addition, we may disable unauthorized or illegal software that has been placed on your Wii Console without notifying you where necessary, in order to comply with applicable laws, assist law enforcement, protect us and our customers, and prevent the use and distribution of software obtained through improper channels."
After:
"We may without notifying you, download updates, patches, upgrades and similar software to your Wii Console and may disable unauthorized or illegal software placed on your Wii Console to ensure that your Wii Console is operating properly and efficiently, comply with applicable laws, assist law enforcement, protect us and our customers, or prevent the use and distribution of software obtained through improper channels."
It is starting to look like Nintendo is taking a step down a very slippery slope. Hopefully some of the more tech savvy users have realized the changes that have been made and choose to take a stand against it. Though I have not hacked my Wii, I have this thing against Big Brother telling me what to do, so I guess this means that my Wii is now WiFi disabled.

So if they want to get you they will. Turn your Wii24 offs!

Correct me if I'm wrong.
If this unattended update thingie has really been deployed in this update, wouldn't be logical (for them, of course) to wire it into WC24 instead of using the System Menu?
Most of the infrastructure for autoupdates is already there - http, SSL, smtp/pop (maybe they could trigger autoupdates by mail?), heck there's even the CHANS virtual machine!

(That's just an uneducated guess, I'm not fluent in ARM assembler and I don't have time to actually do such an analysis.)

Good catch... it's kept alive in standby mode... most possibly implemented as a wc24 feature...

ps: download part should be in the wc24, but installation will possibly be in the system menu, at the very first start of the wii after download...

LOL, my Wii won't operate properly without the ability to run homebrew. I guess that's a matter of opinion...

Am I right in thinking if no one updates then there is no problem. Just wait for some of the geniuses on here to work a patch or something

Ok so has anyone confirmed if usb 2.0 is enabled?? as for faster speeds i saw the vid with world of go being installed very fast .

I've read most of the thread, but this automatically-updated thing is still quite ambiguous.

My wii currently hast the latest homebrew channel installed using the latest twilight hack as of 2 weeks ago. My firmware is 3.2u and I used the updater from WiiBrew to update my WiiShop channel, install the IO & do that hash sig check patch thing...

So, I didnt have time to turn on my wii this morning, but I noticed it blinking when I left my home. Should I expect that Nintendo has AUTOMATICALLY updated my wii?

Some folks are saying that it's done automatically, and others are saying that you still have to accept the update (just as all other updates were done in the past).

So which is it - automatic or not?

GRACIAS!!

you should still have to accept update to 3.4U. then, after that it appears they will be able to update you automatically without your knowledge.

i turned my wc24 off along time ago. the only time i turn it on is when im bored and want to use the everybody votes channel. you can also turn wc24 standby mode off.,, no idea what it does though. the only thing i wanted it for was to charge my wiimotes when the system was turned off. instead i bought a powered 4 port USB hub for that

I would think it would be clear enough by now after several people answering, but I guess not.

No Wii can or has been updated automatically to 3.4.
The blinking blue light simple means you have a message on the Wii Message Board.

You Wii will never EVER be updated automatically without your consent.

Anyone who is now on 3.4 and doesnt want to be, stop whining... you updated....your fault....not Nintendos

it's weird they chose 254 to block, since all it is really used for by most end-users is the rather buggy MPlayerDVD...this doesn't disable backup launchers at all, which almost makes me think it was a "mistake" in a way.

oh well....still rockin' 3.2.
Given Nintendo's long QA cycle, this thing was probably already being QA'd before the first backup loader was even out.

yea....but why block it if that is the case?
all it did for most people was enable chippers to have DVD-Video Playback....are they planning on incorporating that themselves?

just embarrassed 'cause the homebrewers created a program that showed it could be done on any wii when they said it couldn't?
well then block DVDx, not the IOS it uses....oh wait, they tried to do both already.....

it just seems like a really dumb, wasted effort....redundant especially since with the fakesigning bug "fixed" in the last update people "shouldn't" be able to install DVDx (or patchmii) anyway.

It feels like a weird approach that accomplishes nothing immediately, although the autoupdating will certainly have advantages for ninty.
