According to Marcan's Wiimpersonator, the second link adds an IOS254 to the Wii. If I remember correctly, isn't that the IOS version used by the warez loaders?
It sure is. Not only them but a few other things also

it's weird they chose 254 to block, since all it is really used for by most end-users is the rather buggy MPlayerDVD...this doesn't disable backup launchers at all, which almost makes me think it was a "mistake" in a way.

oh well....still rockin' 3.2.

True, they were already allowed to do so, but they never executed that right until now.
They did state it, but maybe not have had the actual ability to do so.
They have proven now they do have the ability and use that ability.

Well just to be on the safe side, I switched off wireless internet.
Who knows what kind of dirty tricks Nintendo might try to use. Perhaps when you're playing a game online, let's say medal of honor, and in the background it's downloading the new update..
(If I was a Nintendo developer, I would have designed it that way)

Oh really?

Wii update 3.4 installed this morning. 5 hours later now, HBC still works.

Also from the Dutch EULA:

D. UPDATES EN UPGRADES

Om ervoor te zorgen dat je Wii-systeem goed en efficiënt werkt, worden updates, patches, upgrades en soortgelijke software automatisch op je Wii-systeem geïnstalleerd.

Laatst bijgewerkt: 10.10.2007

It's been in the EULA for over a year now.

I'm starting to think the 'homebrew-kill-function' in the latest update is triggered by the TP savefile.
If it's on the Wii it get deleted along with all 'illegal' channels, if not no channels are touched.

Anyone willing to test this theory ?

/me LOL's at the thought of someone actually doing so...

Nintendo have released another Wii update, version 3.4, installing which gives the software permission to “check for and automatically remove” any “unauthorized modifications to save files”. That means that any users of the homebrew channel will see their tweaked game save files - for titles such as Twilight Princess - deleted.

Nintendo is justifying the move by claiming that such modifications “may impair gameplay or the Wii console”. In the process any modified or customized software, together with non-official channels, are wiped. According to initial reports, it looks as though the 3.4 update itself changes very little apart from the ToS tweak and introducing this new search-and-destroy tool.

The advice to anybody using a modified Wii is to hold off on updating the console until the homebrew community has had a chance to circumnavigate the new “protection”. Nintendo’s explanation seems more than a little ridiculous: it’s not as though anybody would “accidentally” install, say, the homebrew channel and then blame the manufacturer should something “mysteriously” go awry later. They’d do better to work with the third-party developers to address some of the gaps in the Wii that cause people to turn to these hacks.

So if your on say 3.2 they cannot auto update you as you havent agreed, so you can still have wiiconnect24 on

Hahaha, thats a little extreme. Unless they start playing dirty tricks. But I don't think that will happen.

Yeah, I saw that damn blue light this morning. Very intimidating.

I'm very curious on which countries have passed legislature on auto-updating computer game consoles, please elaborate Screemer.
sadly i can't proof it. i haven't studied laws and just got fundamental classes about media laws during my studies.

but what i can tell laws regarding privacy and legal use an far less company friendly in germany than they are in the us. in germany for example there is a law which draws some eulas obsolete if one single paragraph is not lawful. like i said i am not sure about a autoupdate function without user confirmation. if i remember it right m$ had problems in europe after introduction of the autoupdate feature with winxp. they had to make sure that the user accepts every update.

maybe i am wrong with all of my assumptions.

Does anyone know the IP range for nus.cdn.shop.wii.com? I'm on 3.3U (pre Oct-23) and I have WiiConnect24 disabled, but just in case, I would like to block that IP range using my router (it only accepts IP ranges, no domain names)

After microsoft started banning live accounts last week, it's no surprize that The big N have taken action.
Running any mod on a system that is connected to the Net is dangerous IMO.
The old saying is "if you play with Fire you'll get your Arse burnt"

Best solution 2 wii's one virgin one modded. if you love a game and want to play it online. Use the virgin wii, and abuse the modded one for all the other tat that is released.
