Gaming 3.0E open wii update without bricking

Well I told a friend to wait for me to remove the avr chip and then update his wii so I can put it back and he accidentally forgot wiiconnect 24 on and his wii updated to 3.0E without any problems.Does anyone have a clue about this??I think that the bricking of wii's with the new firmware is just a fake rumor,or is there a possibility that bricking could be prevented with wiiconnect 24?

I think only one user has reported to get bricked with an openwii. The rest of the cases turned out fine from updating. I think that was the only brick from any modchip.

I kinda think he/she was just trying to make people scared about the bricking idea..I searched for his post on open wii and I didn't find it.
