When playing games both screens go black randomly turning on and off. I put it to sleep mode and back and it works for a second then goes back to flickering, then eventually stops for a while. The blue light is on the entire time during it. I have a feeling that it goes to sleep mode on its own.

Do you suspect the sleep switch to randomly go on/off internally?
Turn the O2DS fully off and gently move the switch 100 times back and forth. That temporarily made the power switch of a GBA work again. In the end I had to solder in a new one.

Probably a dirty or oxidized sleep switch. Spray some spray IPA or contact cleaner into the sleep switch and move it back and forth a bunch. Deoxit works best.
Easiest to do if you partially disassemble it.

I'm not too fond of spraying stuff into electronics. "Never had any problems with using [...] for this purpose!"
At least mention to open the device and spray targeted.

Made an account to let you know that doing this saved my joint playthrough of Pokemon Black and my o2ds from costly repair. Extremely grateful, and will likely end up learning to solder to replace my current one.
