Anyway you look at it – this is an absolutely frightening number. Apple has just announced that iOS users have downloaded over 10 billion apps from the app store in just two and a half years!

“With more than 10 billion apps downloaded in just two and a half years—a staggering seven billion apps in the last year alone—the App Store has surpassed our wildest dreams,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “The App Store has revolutionized how software is created, distributed, discovered and sold. While others try to copy the App Store, it continues to offer developers and customers the most innovative experience on the planet.”

Granted, we’d imagine that a large number of said apps were free downloads and/or Angry Birds, but regardless it’s becoming increasingly clear that the App store, and the manner in which it distributes software is changing video games industry at a dramatic pace.

How will this effect the release of the Nintendo 3DS and the as-yet-unannounced PSP2 – will we still be as willing to pay full price for hard copies of video games when accessing content via the app store is cheaper and easier? One thing’s for sure – the next couple of years are going to be very interesting for the increasingly crowded handheld market.

To Be completely honest this is an Insane Amount. Like seriously do I just call the Guinness World Records now or wait another year and see the number double? Now I see how Apple has the money to poop out a new "i(insert random word here)" every year because not only are they milking every piece of technology they have but are also selling applications to everyone and their Mother.

New app, measure how many apps are sold worldwide!

Also in the last line

How will this effect the release of the Nintendo 3DS and the as-yet-unannounced PSP2 – will we still be as willing to pay full price for hard copies of video games when accessing content via the app store is cheaper and easier?

Are they really comparing their apps to 3DS and PSP2 games?

WOW thats a big amount
But comparing this to the 3ds and psp2?!?

How can this "device" compete with the two if this device has some POOPY APPS, and WEIRD BORING MINIGAMES?!?
-----------------------------Im not a troll, not meant to offend someone.. but comparing it to the 2 really is dumb-----------------------------------------------

Old news is old.
It was already posted, along with the details of a contest to win a 10000 iTunes card if you were the 10 billionth's downloader.

Angry Birds is a LOT better than a lot of the shovelware the DS or PSP have - which is really a LOT. And the iPhone isn't really crap, some games are even better on iDevices than PSP/DS, like Madden, Call of Duty, etc...obviously Apple isn't going to contend nor can with Nintendo exclusives, but the market is growing and let's see what the 3DS puts on the table apart from headache reports.

Not impressive. iDevices have been around for how long now? And how many of those apps are free apps and how many are demos and everything? Honestly, not that impressive.
