Hi. I have a Lenovo Legion Y5 that has an HDMI port and an USB C port (and from what I read on the Internet, this port is able to connect the laptop to an external monitor) and I also have an Samsung Smart M5 that has 2 HDMI ports (one is ARC, not sure if that helps me) and two USB A ports.

What I wanted to do is to connect my keyboard and mouse to the Samsung Monitor on the USB A ports and connecting one HDMI on the monitor to the USB C port (or the HDMI port if that works too) on the laptop and then to be able to use the keyboard and the mouse on the laptop.

I know that this is possible to do on some monitors, I'm just not sure how to do this on mine and I wouldn't want to spend money on an adapter/cable for it to not work xD

Thanks in advance

Like @XAIXER and the others said, get something like this: HUB, if you've got an USB charger you can use this to power the hub and your laptop via the hub. It can act like a docking station in most situations.
I've got something similar

Get a hub/dock.
The screen doesn't come with an USB B port, so you need to connected the keyboard and mouse to a usb hub/dock that is connected to your laptop as suggested above.

Thanks for your answers. So, this basically means that, for what I wanted, the USB A ports on the monitor are useless?
As specified on the Samsung's web page. That monitor has 2 HDMI ports and a integrated USB Hub. So you need to connect a HDMI cable from laptop to monitor, and a USB cable from laptop to monitor input, then on the two USB female ports you can connect a keyboard and mouse
"USB cable from laptop to monitor input"
Sorry, this phrase here got me a bit confused, mind if you explain a little more?

You can use to charge stuffs but you won't be able to connect mouse/keyboard through those ports. Screen like Dell U2414H offer USB B port so you can connect a usb A to USB B cable to those screen and connect mouse and keyboard from your computer via those usb ports on the computer. As for you screen goes, it doesn't so you need a dock/hub.

Your monitor have a USB hub integrated, if you look well the back of the monitor you will find two USB female type A ports (rectangular ones) and a USB Type B connector (square one) that one is the input of the HUB:

you need a cable to connect your USB port on laptop with the USB-B port on monitor, is mor like the cable of the printers. then the two USB-A ports on monitor become active.

Humm, mine does have it, but some monitors uses the HDMI (ARC) to carry the USB Signal and remote controller signals, depends on the exact model of the monitor.
Arc is only for audio return same for earc just more bandwidth

Hdmi cec is the remote signal passthrough which is like 15 years old now

Nothing carries the USB signal

from what I can see from a quick google you just need to plug the USB-C cable to your laptop and that will charge your laptop, do your video output and allow the USB ports on the monitor to be used

so you just need a USB-C to USB-C cable

hmm actually im not sure, the review I looked at was comparing the M7 monitors and the M5 im not sure if the M5 has the USB-C port on it, it might just be the M7 models, I guess the M5 might just have the USB ports for charging devices and playing media from the built in smart features

What does HDMI Audio Return Channel has to do with Upstreaming USB ports?, the OP wants to use the USB port on the back of the monitor to transfer data, in order to do that on a monitor, you need a monitor with upstream port and an USB 3.0 Upstream Cable, (USB A to USB B connection), in OP case he/she doesn't have one.

Without knowing the exact model number of the monitor, this is my best guess to the situation.

If your monitor has a USB Type-C port, you can use that to connect to your computer, it should transmit the display signal from your computer to your monitor (no HDMI necessary), and transmit the attached devices back to the computer.

If your monitor lacks the the type-c port, the USB ports can only be used with the built in apps.

I've been reading your question agian:
- You can use you hdmi port for the display part.
- You can use a usb-a - usb-b cable to connect your pc to the monitor: then u can use the ports on your monitor for keyboard and mouse.

Edit: read the manual, your monitor doesnt have usb-B input neither does it have an usb hub: USB A ports are useless for keyboards, mice etc. They can only be used for external storage (view photo's, mp3's) and installing apps.

HDMI cable doesnt transport USB signals. :)

USB 3 can transport HDMI signals.

Monitor doesnt have USB 3.

Get USB 3 dock/hub (the thing in the image posted) with long cable (50 bucks-ish, could be 70 or 150, or skys the limit). Ducktapes it to the back of your monitor. Win.

USB 3 dock has HDMI port (for monitor) and USB A port (for USB hub on monitor). Now everything works, and only one cable on desk.

One issue still remaining - USB dock doesnt charge your laptop.
Which is why you buy monitors with USB3 support that can also charge laptops via its power supply. That way you have truely one cable on desk solution. :) (But also your laptops battery degrades faster, because its always charging... ;) )

My USB dock does charge my laptop (see picture, the only thing connected to the laptop is the dock with usb-C), use the correct powersupply (mine is 65W). the hub should have something like "PD-charging".
