Vitor Vilela, a Brazilian Super Nintendo hacker also known for his FastROM projects that speed up classic Super Nintendo titles, has officially released a widescreen hack for the landmark Super Nintendo title Super Mario World. This hack renders the entire game as it should look normally, but expanded to fit the widescreen resolution that's standard today. Currently, it only supports 16:9 and 16:10 monitor resolutions, but more additions are planned, such as support for 2:1 or the 21:9 ultrawide aspect ratios. As of right now, a patched ROM will only be compatible with the bsnes-hd emulator.

Twitter user @fraencko shared some images of the game running on a widescreen monitor that can be seen below.

I'm impressed at first glance by the work Vitor put into this... and then he let slip that it requires a BSNES fork.

And since I exclusively use MESEN-S when it comes to the SNES now... That's no good for me. And Sour's off doing... whatever they can do to not be accused of plagiarism for code in MESEN and MESEN-S (or so I'd heard? I don't know about heresay)? So both of those emulators are dead in the water, after so much promising progress...

Super Metroid was the first game to support widescreen on bsnes-HD, look in the game fixes folder of the emulator for the patch and .bso.

I customized my controller (wii pro controller with mayflash adapter) with bsnes hd, then made a backup of the game and app to two hdds and my internal hdd. everything works. :D I just wish there wasn't a bug with the mayflash adapter to where the computer screen won't turn off. I have to unplug it. it's been unplugged for well over a year, and I had no problems connecting my wii u pro controller to it again. the wii u pro controller's battery was low, but I'm surprised, having not been charged for that long, that it still had some power left in it. it's charging right now. ;)

btw, I fixed the checksum of all games I patched for the snes except for final fantasy v. for some reason, it fixes it, but then it's suddenly incorrect again. that's the only game that wouldn't work, not sure why. it doesn't matter though as snes emulators and the snes mini don't care about the checksum, even if it's bad. systems that are supposed to be 100% correct might have a problem with it, just those don't.

btw, iirc, trials of mana's checksum isn't correct either, the one from the mana collection, so Nintendo didn't bother fixing it. I guess the switch doesn't care either. I corrected that one even though it's unnecessary. :)

I'm sorry but maybe I'm confused I always played this game on widescreen on emulators with no issues and no problems.

Played this on PS2/ PS3/ Switch/ at full screen maybe I'm missing something I do remember I had to adjust my settings but I rarely play SNES on full screen anymore maybe that's why I never noticed

This mod makes sure that all sprites you're seeing are their original size instead of stretching them. You're seeing more of the scene at one time than you would if you were using the normal stretch option in emulators.

Nice mod and everything, but I tend to be more of a purist when playing my game titles especially retro. I run them vanilla just to play them as how the devs originally intended.

mega man, one of my favorite series. I didn't even know there was a genesis port.
Same here, the game's soundtrack made me fall in love w/ the game as a kid... As much of a SNES fanboy I am, the game actually looks more visually appealing on the Genesis.
