I had the same problems with my N3DS (refurb bought from Nintendo on ebay just before Christmas) and mine seems to be hardware error. If I pinch the lower left corner of the device (below the dpad) together it will work fine. Otherwise it will randomly not start, or start but crash almost immediately. It took me a while to figure that out.

OMG. It didn't work at first, but when I press down on the D-pad while powering up, I can boot into home menu and the system stays alive.
This reminds me of a common problem with the charging port. Bent connectors.
I will look into this further now.
THANKS!

EDIT: Only for 10 minutes! LOL.
But it smells like a hardware issue. Lose connectors, hair cracks on the motherboard. Something like that.

@Elwyndas, :(

Option 1: Fix it yourself.

Tutorial
Replacement n3DSXL motherboard
Screwdriver set

***

Option 2: Get it repaired by someone else.
I believe testerfan is specialized more in nonmodule repairs.

***

Option 3: Acquire another n3DSXL.

Refurbished n3DSXL systems.

What? Could it be?

@Elwyndas, if you disassemble the n3DSXL, see if disconnecting and reconnecting the game cartridge slot reader does anything.

Edit - Safer yet, does GodMode9 dumps cart .3DS roms?

It was under warranty, so I sent it in to N. I just got an email back saying it's been repaired and it's on it's way back to me.

When I sent it in, they wanted me to send the device and the memory card in it. I was already on B9S, and I sent them a blank 4G MicroSD. I *did not* remove CFW from internal storage.

I'm not saying it's going to work for you, I'm just following up because no one ever does on threads like this and I really would have liked to see something like this when I sent mine in.

My problem clearly was hardware error. Good luck to whoever in the future finds this thread.
