I have been very disappointed in the fact that Nintendo has failed to make it possible to back up save data for Splatoon 2, and it appears that Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be in the same boat. There are a number of ways they could fix this problem, such as by storing the save data in a server permanently, as is the case with online games like World of Warcraft, where the save data is tied to the account, rather than the console. In the case of Animal Crossing, it seems preposterous that they would disallow the use of cloud saves for a non-competitive game.

As a result of this incompetency, I am left fearing for my save data for these games in the event of my Switch malfunctioning, being destroyed, or being stolen. I have heard that it is possible to back up the save data for any game locally using a program called Checkpoint. I am a novice when it comes to any kind of Switch modding, although I have had a great deal of experience with Wii, DSi, and 3DS modding. I don't want to install a custom firmware, or do anything permanent. I want to completely minimize the risk of having my console banned by Nintendo.

I only have one goal, to back up the locally-stored save data for games such as Splatoon 2 that do not support Nintendo's cloud saves, and I wish to achieve it with as little risk of being banned as possible, using the current Switch system version, and without any real risk of damaging or bricking the Switch. I wouldn't mind also backing up the entire NAND, but that is less important to me, since I have the Switch Online service, and all of my other games support cloud saves. Finally, I need to be able to restore any backups made to a new Switch or my current one, depending on what may happen to it in the future. I also want any restores to be as risk-free as possible, in all of the ways previously mentioned. With all that having been said, how can I get started?

I'm in the same boat as you. my system is legit, and I wish there was a way to backup saves (generally). I'm assuming that they had some games are not compatible with cloud saving due to exploits or cheating. I can see that with games like pokemon and splatoon 2, but I have another game Super Lucky's Tale that is also incompatible. that one makes no sense. I beat the game, so hoping the game save will stay with me.

Checkpoint can't be used without running Custom Firmware. You can, however, backup your NAND and if shit ever hits the fan, you can extract the save from the NAND backup. You could also extract the save from the NAND now and keep it, but it's kind of a long/confusing process that I wouldn't want to go through every time I want to backup. If you don't have enough storage for a 32gb nand backup, you could also use memloader and just make backups of your whole save folder, and you can extract the save from that at a later time if needed.

How would I go about backing up the NAND, and can I do it without a CFW? What is the risk of a ban or damage to the Switch? I have plenty of storage for a NAND backup. I just want to have backups of Splatoon 2 and similar games on hand in the event that my Switch is destroyed or stolen. I don't intend to ever restore backed up data outside of those scenarios, except when testing the backup/restore system.

You need to have a vulnerable switch to do it. You don't need CFW but you will need to inject a payload to backup the nand, Any tutorail for installing CFW should start with how to backup the NAND. You can't mess up the switch or get banned for just backing up the nand. Also, make sure you dump your biskeys incase you need to mount the backups if the switch gets stolen or broke.

I'm running atmosphere on emulated emmc on my switch, but I also can boot the official emmc under cfw and I'm wondering, can I backup and restore splatoon 2 from sys-emmc (official memory space under cfw) and in case of loss of data or console will it work in another switch exploitable console?
