I have been very disappointed in the fact that Nintendo has failed to make it possible to back up save data for Splatoon 2, and it appears that Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be in the same boat. There are a number of ways they could fix this problem, such as by storing the save data in a server permanently, as is the case with online games like World of Warcraft, where the save data is tied to the account, rather than the console. In the case of Animal Crossing, it seems preposterous that they would disallow the use of cloud saves for a non-competitive game.
As a result of this incompetency, I am left fearing for my save data for these games in the event of my Switch malfunctioning, being destroyed, or being stolen. I have heard that it is possible to back up the save data for any game locally using a program called Checkpoint. I am a novice when it comes to any kind of Switch modding, although I have had a great deal of experience with Wii, DSi, and 3DS modding. I don't want to install a custom firmware, or do anything permanent. I want to completely minimize the risk of having my console banned by Nintendo.
I only have one goal, to back up the locally-stored save data for games such as Splatoon 2 that do not support Nintendo's cloud saves, and I wish to achieve it with as little risk of being banned as possible, using the current Switch system version, and without any real risk of damaging or bricking the Switch. I wouldn't mind also backing up the entire NAND, but that is less important to me, since I have the Switch Online service, and all of my other games support cloud saves. Finally, I need to be able to restore any backups made to a new Switch or my current one, depending on what may happen to it in the future. I also want any restores to be as risk-free as possible, in all of the ways previously mentioned. With all that having been said, how can I get started?
