I hacked my 3DS recently and I've been happy.
Although I have enough games, 2 player option would be great! This is why I'm thinking about a Switch.

Here are a few questions:

Is it easy to hack without bricking?
(Do I need any hardware mods or is it all software like Wii and 3DS?)

I don't like online games but I wouldn't want to block them. Can I still play online with a hacked Switch? (Does Nintendo sell online access like MicroCON or is it free to play online like Sony?)

Is it worth buying just for Smash and Mario Kart (my fave 2/2+ player games)?

Is the quality/quantity of games still going strong? (I'm so glad I never had the cash to get a WiiU!)

Do I have to buy a specific external?

Thanks

I wouldn't by a switch just yet if you want to hack- its pretty amazing for early life but tons of things to consider/ big big SD cards are needed and not all switches are hackable/ you have to know what to buy

your saying you JUST got a 3DS and its modded? just stick with that for now to keep your focus

It is pretty hard to brick the console considering there is zero chance of bricking when you initially hack the Switch. The exploit has components of both a softmod and hardmod. You send payloads via USB cable which is the softmod but to do that, you have to put the console into RCM with a piece of hardware such as a jig.

While you can certainly play online with a hacked Switch, a ban hammer can and will fall at any moment so don't be surprised if your online games stop working.

Used consoles go for pretty cheap although they usually do not come with any Joy-Cons which are the main controllers of the Switch. But if you have a Wii U Gamecube adapter and some GCN controllers, you can use those to play both of your games.

Its sort of a similar situation to the Wii. There are some stellar titles but also a lot of shovelware namely in the form of third-party games and Indies.

If you are looking to hack, you need a serial number which is unpatched. You can refer to this thread for a list of unpatched, patched, and somewhere in between serial numbers.

I say Smash and Mario Kart make it worth it if you really like those titles. I just picked up a used switch with Smash and a few other games. Smash has taken up most of my game time and I'm not a fighting game person. I've just been having a blast with it.

I'd say if you get an unpatched switch it's really easy to hack it and get started.
Personally I'm always offline, so can't speak about online.
Also, I've got a 200gb SD on mine, and this is enough for roughly 40games for me. Some big ones are mk11, hellblade etc, but alot of games are not that big.
I can't see me needing over 40, even 20 games on the console at the same time, since you can always switch them.

Do you need tin foil/a jig to use custom firmware?

Well yeah, that you do need, at least once to get in to rcm mode. After that you can enable auto-rcm which boots the switch into rcm mode even without a jig/paperclip/tinfoil.

I bought a SX pro dongle. It came with a jig and SX os licence.
I only use SX os, but there are free cfw alternatives. Mounting .xci files was a feature I really wanted, and that's why I went with SX.
But if you only want a jig you can get them really cheap on eBay and similar sites

A few things to consider when thinking about purchasing a Switch:

+ Still many unused / new hackable Switches available at the moment
+ Hacking the Switch can be done with a 1$ jig (or a paper-clip if you are super cheap)
+ Practically no risk of bricking your Switch

- Playing online with a modded Switch will result in a ban sooner or later. Neither XCI nor NSP can protect against that
- There will supposedly be a new revision of the Switch, which might be smaller and / or with better battery life
- The new revision will almost certainly not be hackable anytime soon (unless Nintendo really fucks up)

Is it worth buying just for Smash and Mario Kart (my fave 2/2+ player games)?
In my personal opinion yes, considering how many years of entertainment my friends and I got out of Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Is the quality/quantity of games still going strong? (I'm so glad I never had the cash to get a WiiU!)
Depends on what games you want. At the moment there are tons and tons of shovelware mobile ports and console ports, with very few original games. But the few original games make it worthwhile by themselves.

Anyways, those are my 2c to your questions. Hope I could help at least a little.

I bought the switch two years ago and have been disappointed. They need to release more switch exclusives and nintendo really needs to get themselves together at least to how they were 10 years ago.

You should definitely get a switch, the switch in on fire right now.
It will meet all your needs, and then some.

keep in mind that your 3DS will probably become a dust collector.

Yeah 3DS' last big game just came out Persona Q2 it's dead. Of course that's not a reason to get rid of it you just got it and there's a lot of games to try out, but for the future there's nothing more coming out.

Sorry, I forgot to reply.

Thanks for all tips, I'm thinking about doing (even) higher edu. so I won't have enough cash (considering how 3DS is enough for me right now).

PlayStation 4 has required a subscription since launch for online play. Yes the Nintendo switch requires a fee too. The subscription for the Nintendo Switch is only 20.00 a year for one account or 35 for a family account.

The online requires a smartphone for voice chat. There isn’t any text/messaging service. The switch still requires friend code trading to add friends to your friends list. Cloud saves require the sub fee and to prevent hacks and cheating, it’s the only way to back up your saves. Only a few games support the cloud save function. Pokémon S/S snapped many Pokémon out of existent. The battery life even in air plan mode n brightness turn all the way down is extremely poor. The only way to cancel your subscription for the switch is through the switch it self. So if you get banned, you will have to cancel your credit card or report it stolen. Other wise, you will continue to pay for a service you can’t use.
