Junichi Masuda responds to backlash over Pokemon Sword and Shield not including every Pokemon

fgBFDru.png

When it was revealed at E3 2019 that not every Pokemon would be available in Pokemon Sword and Shield, the internet erupted in rage, with players upset by the idea that some of their favorites might not be usable in the latest Pokemon entries. A few weeks after the initial outcry, Game Freak has decided to step forward with an official statement on the matter. Pokemon series producer and director Junichi Masuda claimed that Game Freak is passionate about every Pokemon that they've created, but that the company had to make the difficult choice to not include the full lineup of over 800 monsters. Masuda also says that even if some Pokemon won't be in this series of games, they still have a chance to appear in further entries, later down the line. Perhaps that means we'll see a full Pokedex when the inevitable revision or sequel game releases one day.

For those unimpeded by the controversy, Pokemon Sword and Shield is set to launch worldwide on November 15th.

Thank you to all of our fans for caring so deeply about Pokémon. Recently, I shared the news that some Pokémon cannot be transferred to Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. I've read all your comments and appreciate your love and passion for Pokémon.

Just like all of you, we are passionate about Pokémon and each and every one of them is very important to us. After so many years of developing the Pokémon video games, this was a very difficult decision for me. I'd like to make one thing clear: even if a specific Pokémon is not available in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, that does not mean it will not appear in future games.

The world of Pokémon continues to evolve. The Galar region offers new Pokémon to encounter, Trainers to battle, and adventures to embark on. We are pouring our hearts into these games, and we hope you will look forward to joining us on this new journey.

Hey, wouldn't you guys rather them put more money into graphics/mechanics instead of the whole budget going into having all the Pokemon looking just "okay".

In any case, if this is all about trying to get the game to release in November, maybe next time just don't announce the game until you have developed most of it with all the pokemon...

Perhaps if they feel that sword and shield sell well enough they will enclude every or a lot of pokemon in the next game? If they do a 3rd version for the game that is? They probably couldbn't be arsed to make all 807 pokemon giant id say. It is a real shame too.

I think if Sword/Shield can sell millions while only needing to include probably less than half the amount of Pokémon, it might set a dangerous slope where they don't need to put much effort into development.

Pokémon game released before Christmas will probably ensure this game will be an instant hit which will justify their decision.

Yeah, that's fine.

Looking back at it, I never actually imported all of my Pokemon into US/UM either. Or X and Y for that matter. Or any game, ever. If Pokemon Home will let us preserve our Pokemon and have them centralized for whatever comes next, than that's fine.

Eh, it's Nintendo, no matter how shitty it looks, those are high paid artist, and if rumors that it was a 3ds game are true, then that explains it. (Though then it should have had a release on both systems :/ )

still dont see the reason for such a overblown outcry by the fans
word.

People are taking this so personally it's insanely self centred. If you don't like it, don't buy it, and of course it is well within your right to express your dislike for the decision, but some of the comments on here are acting like GameFreak have some kind of agenda to specifically piss off long-term Pokémon fans.

It just reeks of a lack of awareness for time, budgeting, and how the inclusion of 800+ mons would inevitably lead to some pretty ugly compromises. If you're unwilling to even entertain these factors because "wah all they care about is money" you're seriously missing the point.

I wish the national dex could be in Sword/Shield, really do, and so do they, but in their view it shouldn't come at the expense of having to simplify the game mechanics into just a boring formulaic entry into the series with nothing new to show for itself (beyond new Pokémon designs) just to accommodate this demand. They're not trying to piss fans off on purpose; that doesn't make sense.

I’m not buying it

Remember Ruby and Sapphire? Not only you couldn't transfer Pokemon from the Gameboy Color games, the only way to get all Pokemon was cheating. It took two years to be able to get most of the Pokemon without cheating. And you still had to cheat to get them all if you didn't go to a Nintendo event to get some legendaries. And this was before online trading existed.

Is possible the rest of the Pokemon or most of them will be added on a later game.

USUM don't even have a national dex so why crying? also it's not like you gonna catch all of it, hence people will only transfer them all. lmfao

BTW looking forward for VGC 2020!

This generation is full of greedy crybabies.

LOL they have one the biggest budgets in the world , ITS POKEMON ,you just cannot use that argument when a team like CD project red creates something as detailled and advanced like the witcher 3 with 1% of what Game freak can easily afford.
Who are you to say what they can and can't afford? You do not know their budget, which is probably a lot less than you claim it to be, and even if it was a large budget, that doesn't mean they have an endless budget. They have to use it effectively and evaluate each factor that goes into making the game or else they'll run out of money before the game's done. 800+ high-resolution models with high-resolution textures seem like a lot of time and money that they don't have, especially when trying to work on more than one game at once.

That wasn't a response.
He just repeated what everyone already knew.

Now we all know that it wasn't his call to make. And we all know that the company shouldn't push him to the frontlines to take the heat.

But anger and disappointment is justified when it comes to one of the most lucrative franchise on the planet. Especially when this decision will all but ensure the games bottomline to be way, way below expectations, meaning the series as a whole might now closing in on it's end.

I never thought this idea of releasing a 100 new ones every generation was sustainable for the brand in the first place. It's not like the players buy it for that... some marketing director put this on their mind long ago and they stuck to it.

They could have kept a smaller pace or refined the existing ones, have half the Pokémon overall and still be equally successful. Oh well.
it is, and the community saw this issue coming ages ago. Gamefreak have had years to try and solve it. But they've just kept on trucking.

I know thats wrong but I kinda feel justified to pirate this one, as I can not in good conciousness aid this anti consumer bullsh*t. When the Devs dont seem to care about fans or the game at all, why should I feel bad about the devs?

I mean, I really dont understand why they dont try to keep those rather 'hardcore' fans happy aswell as the more common fans who may play this as their first Game. It's not that we want to encounter all PKMN in the game or even dynamax them, we rather want, that we could send all those perfectly breeded PKMN from previous gens into Sh/Sw.
For someone like me, who considers newer gens to be unplayable(or atleast very boring) until harder difficulty 'hacks' arrive and plays them later with cheatet favmons on lvl 5 instead of the generic starters, this is kinda frustrating to hear.

I disagree, seeing the numbers of sold PKMN Pikachu/Eevee games, there are billions of dollars more to be milked of consumers. I dont see any end to this as long as there's money to be made.

The models already are in HD. It's been told in this forum over and over. This is just so in the new game they can come with new games and all the pokemons like they were saivours and sell more.
They're so super HD that even the gamecube pokemon games look better and the animation is way better

That's not what HD means. But I aint gonna explain this. It's being explained many times, and I'm just tired. For the first time in my life, I wish this Pokémon game fail.
