Not every women are like that, we have lots of smart women in this forum like (sorry if i will spell it wrong) WAR.

He didn't say that women are stupid, he only said that they are easily frustated and then simply stop using it. While men commonly would destroy the device if that happens to them.

A select few, however, of both sexes actually ask others for help or read the manual.

Generalizations are all stupid

Maybe it's the cheap nature of my family, but everyone I know related to me would rather spend days and weeks to get something to work rather then abandon it.

Agreed.. I never said anything about women being stupid. I simply said that women who ARN'T computer literate might find the R4 confusing and complicated...

Anyway.. Can someone help me with 'hidden files'.. I tried it on mine.. I used the Windows Propreties to make the 3 "_DS*" files and "_system_" directory Hidden.. Its hidden under windows (now shown as 'feint') but when I put it in the R4 and select the "Files" view, I can still see ALL the files (including the hidden ones).

Any ideas?

Jon

Why do you have to show it under the 'files' view? The files view is pretty much useless in the R4, if you need to open any music files, videos, or ebooks just use moonshell. All the firmware can do is launch games and homebrew. (which are both shown under 'games'.

If they can't figure out how to use the R4 (how much simpler can a flash cart even get?), then they probably don't deserve to be using one anyway. That or someone can spend a whole 5 minutes showing them how to use it. A little harsh but just my .02.

Oh come on.. You arn't being fair.. its easy for us.. We know computers.. We understand them.. Some of us are older and learned about them as they eveolved.. Others are young enough to have never known a life without computers.

Imagine a 40+ year old woman (or man for that matter) who has NEVER used a PC.. She doens't understand files... She doesnt' understand directories.. How can you say that they don't deserve to be using one, just because tehy have no knowledge/understanding/experience. Yes they can learn (and will).. But they dont' care about 'views' or being able to 'delete'.. They just want to be able to play games! Is that unreasonable??

My girlfriends 70 year old Dad recently bought a laptop and to this day, I havn't been able to get him to understand what a directory is, let alone do anything clever.. Does that mean that he doesn't deserve to have it?

I don't get it.. Why is everyone being so personal... You all need to grow up a bit and accept that some people arn't quite as clever as you all think you are!

I have been using computers every day since I was 11 (back in the days of the ZX80).. Since then I have formed a sucessful carrer in 'computing' (techincal support) where I now manage a team of engineers.. Do you think I got where I do by saying "people dont' diserve something, just because they don't understand"... Just get out there and meet some REAL people. Not people who share teh same interests as you.. You might be surprised to find that a lot of people don't understand technology.. But guess what, they might understand something that YOU don't.. And I bet they woudn't say that YOU don't deserve something because you don't understand their specilist subject!

Not sure why you were so insistent on pushing flashcarts on to your friends. Sounds like they won't get much use out of it.

Oh my god.. Another person who just feels the need to have a go at me about my actions? "Push flashcards on my friends"? Did I say that?

My colleagues have bought DSs for their Partners.. They want to play games.. My colleagues also want to play games. Perhaps different games. Why not get a flash card? If anything, they are going to get more use out of it that 'game players' as they have no basis on what games they like.. So with a flash card, they can TRY out lots of different games, rather than spending a fortune on buying original games that they won't ever play!

Suggesting that its a good idea is hardly 'pushing' it on them! And I stand by that.. Sure.. i have to give them a helping hand to get them setup and teach them how to use it.. But thats not a problem.

All I asked was whether there was a way to disable some of the more advanced features to make is simply a 'select and play' type device.

I give up! There are a few people here that need to get a life!

I don't know what you mean? Of course you can just ignore the 'file' view and stay in 'games' view which will do exactly the same thing.

But I was under the impression (reading the FAQ) that IF you hid the "_*_" files, then even if you were in the 'FIles' view, you wouldn't see them, but it doesn't appear to work like that!

maybe when you would like make all game and system files attribute "read only", they could not be deleted, and part of problen would be solved, as for the vieving of files, file viecving can be set to "games" on r4, and it show only games, when you copy all games to the root of microsd ad tell your friends "when you want to play, use that "cross button to select the title, and push A button to play" it really is not that hard, you just need to use simple words to them (if they dont understand directories and etc.)

Marking things as read only doesn't protect them either - I've done that to keep my 2 year from erasing all my games but of course it doesn't work.

The only thing you can do to make things as clear as possible to these users is to create a skin that tells them what the buttons do in as clear and as concise as humanly possible. If they can be bother to read, then it's their fault for not being able to use. The R4 is 200x times easier to use than a cell phone imho.

I really wish the R4 team would just concentrate on the gui right now. Just have an ini file to have the card boot directly into the game chooser, turn off the ability to view all files, delete files, etc.

That's why I also said if they don't know how to use one then someone can teach them - it should take a whole 5 minutes, literally. I don't exactly like the idea of going around teaching people how to pirate though. If all she wants to do is play a few games then she should just buy them. I don't imagine she's dying to play every single rom that comes out. Probably just a few games here and there. And yes anyone can be taught. But I was just saying the R4 is so ridiculously simple that if you can't figure it out after someone explains it to you then you should probably stick to just buying the games. R4 = Download games > Drag & Drop > Play!

Look guys.. Its as simple as this.. I am the 'techy'.. My colleagues are not and their wives frankly are clueless.

Its like the blind leading the blind.. I was simply trying to make MY job easier.. Rather than teach my colleague and then have him teach his wife.. I figured that if I could make things simpler by removing the features she won't need (i.e the ability to change views, the ability to select Moonshell on the top level and the ability to delete files) it would save ME the trouble of getting called on Christmas day with someone asking "I can't see any of the games".

It was a simple question. I KNOW the R4 isn't complicated (trust me, after working 30 years in the software industry, I KNOW what complicated is).. But I just figured I could make life easier for everyone involved

The simply answer was "No" (Which some people had the courtesy to say).. I don't know where you get off turning this into some kind of slagging match, by saying implying that they must be "stupid".

As you say, ANYONE could work it out.. But I was simply asking whether I could remove any of the features which she will NEVER use.

"No" is all you had to say.. And thats it.. There is no discussion.. I am not looking for an argument.. I am not looking to have to justify my question. It was a question and thats it.

But instead of treating it like such, you have simply turned it into a way of making yourselves feel clever because you (And the many people you clearly know) are more intelligent than my colleagues wife.. And good for you...

To the people who were willing to offer help, thanks.. And to the rest of you, thanks for nothing

if someone can not figure out the R4 menu then they seriously need to buy retail ONLY. how can anyone be that slow?

I don't know why I am rising to this, but I feel obligued to say again!. They CAN work it out. The WILL work it out... I was trying to make life easy for them!

But incidently.. What if we were taking about your grandparents? Does that make them slow, but because they won't understand the R4? The reason I ask this is that my girlfriend would like to buy a DS for her Parents (Who are grandparents age).. They wouldn't have a clue, but I would like them too have a DS as I think there are few games that 'old timers' might apprecaite. Since they are pensioners, I would like to set them up with a bunch of titles on an R4 and leave it to them to enjoy themselves.. They would never have to worry about adding more ROMs, or worry about saves.. They could just use it and enjoy it... With the R4 in its current form, I am not ashamed to admit that they will not understand it.. Well they will initally, until they press the wrong button and the entire list disspears, or they manage to delete some valuable system files.. Oh yes.. I forgot to say, they live 500 miles away, so I stand NO chance of fixing it for them!

Are you calling them slow?? If so, you really have offended me!

There ARE people out there, who are probably a lot older and perhaps even more intelegant that you, then MAY find the GUI or the whole R4 concept confusing.. But does that make them slow?? I don't think so!

What do you want, a pat on the back because you understand technology.. If so.. Consider this a pat on the back.. Well done!

In all my years on forums, i have never encountered such a group of patronising people!

LOL! Well here's my expert advice:

1. Round up your commercial .nds games in a folder named 'Games'
2. Do the above with your Homebrew - put it in a folder named (you guessed it) 'Homebrew'
3. Make a folder named 'Media'
4. Round up your music, videos and e-books in folders named 'Tunes', 'Vids' and 'E-books' and then bung these folders in your 'Media' folder. Nice and neat now.
5. Download DSOrganize and open up the file browser and press 'X' on all the folders you wish to hide. Hide everything except 'Games' and 'Homebrew' folders.

There you go. All nice and neat and perfectly accessible. My Nan could probably find using an R4 easy now.

if someone can't use the incredibly simple and limited r4 interface then yes they MUST be slow - nothing to do with computer literacy or computer skills, but plain old slow.

You click the first icon, then you scroll up and down a list and press the a button to play a game. it doesn't get any simpler. my 3yr old manages it (and has been using it for nearly a year) and some guy aboves 2yr old sister can use it. if children with NO IT experience can run one then anyone can. a person who can't must be REALLY SLOW (I'll say it loud and large, for the slow amongst us).

Nothing to do with age (old or young), nothing to do with gender but plain and simple old-fashioned slowness. They should stick to original games - this isn't the pc market, it's a black(grey) market product aimed at people who can at least function a mouse.

Also nobody is claiming to be / thinking they are "clever" - quite the opposite in fact, people are saying how easy it is for anyone, not just a nerd (and look at the posts of some of the dribbling types who post on gbatemp; even they manage it).

I'm sorry that there were so many unhelpful members. But you have to remember that one temper's actions do not necessarily represent the entire if GBAtemp.

As for your problem - there isn't a way to hide all of the files from view on the DS, they are still visible. Does locking the file and setting it as read-only work? Or does it still allow the R4 to delete the vital system files?

If only the R4 team would open source their firmware, we wouldn't have these problems.

As for the problems with directories and such - I'd just suggest keeping all the games in the root, that way when you click the Games button in the menu all the games will just be there, instead of making them dig through the directories.

Sorry, but couldn't you just tell them to stay the hell away from the delete button?

Do people really have to have their hand held for every little thing? It's 3 buttons, then a few directional button pad presses and a few "A" key presses, as long as they stay away from the delete key they'll be fine.

I agree with 111111111, nobody can be that slow, not even old people (unlike jweaver said).

Seriously, I worked out how to use an R4 within a few minutes, I even reccomended a computer illiterate friend to get one, even he worked it out within a few minutes.

You might think that everything relating with computers is simple. The fact is - you are not the standard. You can't call someone slow because they can't understand something you can. You must never have dealt with anyone that isn't a geek before (y'know, normal people)
Not everyone can understand the concept of 'views' 'directories' and 'files'. My aunt just got a new laptop a few weeks ago, and yesterday, she phoned me up and asked me how to open up the internet.
You must think that you're really smart, because for some reason you feel the need not only to insult everyone who can't understand a GUI. Have you managed your own server? Can you explain to me how the entire bittorrent protocol works? Can you tell me the difference between FAT and NTFS? Believe it or not, there are people who are both more and less computer literate than you, and insulting GBAtempers or anyone else does nothing to help the topic starter.
You're such an annoying, arrogant, little prick that I wish I could reach through the monitor and punch you in the face.
