Hacking How do I deal with 11.9 update on both of my handhelds?

Back on Nov 30 I updated my 2DS using the homebrew launch and soundhax method from the "guide" website. It worked great. I also have a 3DS which is on 11.3.0 FW that I have not yet upgraded.

My questions are as follows:

1. Can't do any content updates on the 2DS because there is new FW available. Should I update the system to 11.9? Do any of the CFW's need to be updated? Is there anything I have to look at or be concerned about?

2. Am I ok to install CFW 3DS? using the soundhax guide? I was confused by one thing in the guide. It said I could use the same method for the 3DS which is on 11.3.0 but when I went to download the soundhax file from their website it said 5.x - 11.2 I am on 11.3. Is that a problem?

I really don't want to brick either of these consoles and things are a little wonky right now with this newest update. I'm concerned it's a prelude to something bad.

Thanks,

Roveer

  1. If you followed the guide end of November this year, you are good to update your hacked 2DS. To make sure hold "Select" while booting. It should say Luma3DS v9.1 (this is the latest version) right on the top of the upper screen. As soon as you are sure you have Luma 9.1, just go for the update. 11.9 is out for two weeks now and not a single problem occurred with it. The forum would be full of messages if there was a problem.
  2. Weird. You are the second with that question today. I never noticed this with the "11.2" on the Soundhax page. It is probably a typo or the page was never updated for 11.3. On the top of the Github page is says <= 11.3 and inside the readme.md below 3.0-11.2, but but the number 11.3 from the guide is correct! The soundhax vulnerability was fixed in 11.4 as can be seen on 3dbrew.
If you follow the guide line by line, the chance of a brick is almost non existent. You did it once, you can do it again.

Thanks for the reply. I did some reading and I believe I am on Luma3DS v9.1 (which I will make sure).

I also remember reading about the Soundhack that it was supported up to 11.3

As for the guide. At times it seemed like I had no idea what was happening and seems like magic (especially when you play the soundhack file, but it's well written and I followed it to the letter. Looking forward to doing the 3DS.

In a way soundhax is like magic ("deep voodoo") since it relies on a design limitation/flaw in pretty much every modern computer system, specifically that there is no difference between data and code. Thus, all that has to be done is trick the program into executing the "music data" as code which while it can be tricky is unfortunately possible way too often.

Also remember that the technique soundhax uses is no different than how you can get ransomware simply by viewing a website that has a malicious ad, no need to download/run anything. The only real difference is that soundhax merely loads the homebrew menu rather than doing something bad.

Does soundhax perform a buffer underrun/overrun in an unchecked vector in order to execute code? I read a lot and know just enough to think I know what I'm talking about
