Microsoft announces Project xCloud, a game streaming service

While Google has revealed their own game streaming project, currently in a testing phase, Microsoft has decided to show off their alternative as well. Officially announced as Project xCloud, Microsoft promises that this is the next step in gaming, allowing for players to have access to their Xbox One games, anywhere and anytime. Private trials are soon to be underway, with a public trial to occur in 2019, which will showcase how well Microsoft's Azure cloud platform handles high quality game streaming. In the video above, lead developers at Microsoft note that preserving graphical quality, as well as having low latency are highly important to streaming video games, and that their service will be prepared to tackle such issues with ease. Microsoft will have a library of its own games that will be able to be streamed, while making it simple for third party developers to add their games to the repertoire as well, "with no extra work on their part". 5G network support is planned, for the areas that the technology is rolling out in. xCloud will exist as a service to allow console and PC gamers to take their games with them, and will also open a door for a wider audience of more casual gamers to play Xbox titles.

Cloud game-streaming is a multi-faceted, complex challenge. Unlike other forms of digital entertainment, games are interactive experiences that dynamically change based on player input. Delivering a high-quality experience across a variety of devices must account for different obstacles, such as low-latency video streamed remotely, and support a large, multi-user network. In addition to solving latency, other important considerations are supporting the graphical fidelity and framerates that preserve the artist’s original intentions, and the type of input a player has available.

So we inevitably had companies for force subscription models down out knecks, resulting in a very costly (several eco systems with recurring costs)

Now within each eco system they are implementing various sub-subscriptions.

here you have my friends the ugly face of the future

As another fellow said I too like options...

But this is not "options"

Some background. I AM NOT AGAINST THE CONCEPT. The concept is sound and can be done. In fact I had a blast with my psnow trial a few months back and loved how it worked on my vita and ps4. I walked away a believer in the sense that this can technically be done. Yes this is true.

But I must say we as gamers must fight this tooth and nail and not I repeat not support this or any other such venture.

Based on current events in terms of switch and ps4 hacking I imagine our lives are to be changed forever. If they see even moderate success in such a venture I fear us being able to own physical copies being taken away...

forever...

the implications here are in fact vast...

The way I see it streaming is inevitable personally I think that it will always be an option there will never be a time where streaming takes over until it can reliably do so and yes it will one day reliably do so.

Me personally I'm going to use this service to try it out and see how good it is at playing Kingdom Hearts 3, Halo 3, and Gears of War 3.

With our technological advancements I've been saying this whole locking games to a consoles hardware was never going be sustainable forever most consumers don't want this they want their entertainment to revolve around them not the other way around.

This service pretty much confirms that their next shit box will be more a streaming console then a standalone local console.
Hmm.. at E3 they said they were making the next wave of Xbox Consoles. Note the s at the end, then was it a couple of months later when we heard about Scarlet (Scarlett?) - this confirms the next Xbox consoles will come in a full fat, and a streaming based configuration (with the full fat of course also having the option of streaming). This was confirmed months ago, do try to keep up...

As for physical copies of games - I'm sure not all of you are that interested, but Blops 4, it's just been announced, will require a 50GB day one download... now read a little further down and you'll see the game size on your hard drive will be roughly 55GB. So what's the point of the disc really? Little Johnny's gonna get home from school pissing his kecks with excitement over the new COD his mum and dad have just bought him from the local game store, only to find out he's probably not gonna get a match until the next day, watching and weeping while that progress bar slowly fills over the evening. I mean, I'm visualising this scenario in my head and it's fukkin hilarious ....but that's not the point - digital, and in future, streaming, removes this altogether. Get with the times peeps! ;)

Maybe when 5g is rolled out to the masses. As it is now I can see a service like this being used as a testbed for those that do have fast enough internet.

As a matter of fact if the timing is just right I could see this move could be highly successful and may well be a pivotal point for MS.

Speaking of Xbox Scarlett, iirc, the whole idea was for the consoles to do some of the calculations while streaming you the rest of it. I wonder if they will do that with other devices that are strong enough to do some local calculations.

This is looking to be the future of Xbox

Xbox will become a software, a console, and a streaming service.

For Xbox it will just be a Windows 10 device using the rumored but practically confirmed Windows Core OS.
https://www.windowscentral.com/understanding-windows-core-os-and-polaris

About Windows Core OS

  • The idea here is simple: Windows will share the same kernel (OneCore) and now the same OS-level components (Windows Core OS), but the shell is variable and configurable based on the hardware being created.

  • CShell lets devices adjust their UIs for different tasks and experiences. A foldable mobile device would be able to scale between a phone-based UI and a tablet-based UI, and even extend into a desktop mode via Continuum, for example. Or, a Windows 10 PC could take on the Xbox UI when in gaming mode.
The next Xbox will be a system that will use this OS that will also be available on PC but will only have the Xbox Composer on it while PC will probably be able to use both desktop composer and xbox composer.
I suspect that the Xbox UI be what the reworked Xbox App will in the end allowing you to run Xbox One and Xbox Scarlett games on Windows 10 PCs and you will have the option to stream it and play it natively. On Xbox it will be the same thing I also think that the Xbox One will be forwards compatible through streaming but the next Xbox will probably have native backwards compatibility

https://tech4gamers.com/microsoft-xbox-one-user-interface-in-windows-10/

The result of these important changes (which are coming since we know that the console is based on the x86 architecture) will take us to a world where Xbox One X can receive additional devices such as mouse and keyboard without the need for dedicated applications, since basically console will have a Windows 10 very similar to that of our computers, which will be responsible for installing the corresponding drivers, and on the other hand, will dramatically expand the Xbox Play Anywhere program, removing the current limitations and allowing 100% of the console catalog to be available for computers.

This is probably what the future of Xbox is going to be a service though hardware will still exist there will be multiple options. A Xbox Scarlett console, Xbox streaming box, Xbox streaming service, Xbox One, and Windows 10 PC using the Xbox Interface which will probably be put in the app along with the GameOS that runs it's games.

Streaming removes the longevity of the product. Companies would love you to have nothing and rely on them for 100% service. Then they can keep selling you the same thing over and over again. Since you never own anything you have to rely on them to provide it on their service. With a physical copy that does not need a download, i dont have to rely on their servers which will not be up for more then 10 years. Im not giving my money to a game streaming service just for them to control what games i have access to.

Nintendo cant stop me from placing a cart in my snes. How ever if it was a digital service then then can stop me frokm playing the game by simply not having it on their service. Thats the difference im getting at. I can choose to play super mario kart with the same cart i did in 1992 and i dont have to buy anything else. I dont have to keep paying. No service/company can deny me access to a snes cart i own. There is power in choices. Imagine buying a tv and then being told you can only watch content on channel 4. I bet you would not buy that tv....

This whole get with the times is bull shit statement. I'm sure you would also say get with the times when the Nazis were killing the jews... Or when Stalin was killing his own people...

Im not trying to change anybodies mind, Im just getting a point across and that is you will never be able to own anything. You will only be able to do what the service tells you you can do. Those that like streaming thats great for you.

I don't really want steaming but the only place I'd ever even be marginally interested in the possibility would be on PC which Microsoft would probably be the best choice for, I guess.

I find it hard to get excited for an all digital future.
