From nintendo-scene.com Wiki;
....
Hitachi LG GDR-8161b (IDE)
Hitachi LG GDR-8162b (IDE)
Hitachi LG GDR-8163b (IDE)
Hitachi LG GDR-8164b (IDE)
Hitachi LG GDR-H10NBLK (SATA)
Hitachi LG GDR-8082N - USB SLIM Portable Drive
....

The GDR-8082n is a notebook drive, also couldn't you just place the LG drives into an external IDE drive case.

A really long/good thread can be found at http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/563020 on Wii DVD ripping.

I just bought the drive that was recommended in this list on ebay for $16 so, if it actually works on wii disks and possibly gamecube disks, this is probabily going to be the most recommended drive for dumping disks when it comes to value..

I would just use a Wii and external USB hard drive, format the drive to NTFS if your worried about the 12? or so games that are larger than 4GB's.

Bonus feature is you can use the hard drive to boot your games almost eliminating load times :)

This topic is about using the drive to dump the games, not run them from it. :P

Yeah but dumping from the Wii to the external hard drive is super easy literally every loader supports it... lol
I had 2 usb drives corrupted from using rawdump on the wii and I really want to dump games from my pc just because its reliable and I know I have enough storage to hold my games without fear of corrupting the storage im placing my games on...

Weird, used a lot of different external hard drives and own well down to 2 Wii's now... but never had any drives corrupted. I don't do WBFS drives though... NTFS really helps with that I suspect but meh if you need to use your PC to dump than buying a DVD drive is about the only way to go. Once soft modding became a thing I stopped dumping my games on a PC was just a lot easier to pop them straight into the machine that was going to be using it anyway. (by a lot of external drives I mean 40GB then 60 then 80 then 120 then 320 then 500 and I stopped there was enough room for all the games I wanted to play and then some.)

Corrupted drives is almost an alien concept to me, I have heard of it happening but I almost wish I could recreate the issue just so I could see what was happening.

My 3rd Wii died well it still boots.... but no wireless at all so no Wiimotes and no Wifi (the module is a combo unit in the Wii) and ironically launch Wii's use a different type of module than you can easily find online... I wish I had known that before trying to replace it.. lol

laughably it has a really cool mod chip in it with external SD card slot for GC loading... all fancy (useless now since GC emulation is getting better all the time and is fantastic these days already.)

Fake Edit: One thing about my set ups on the Wii, I have always used laptop hard drives in enclosures with a Y cable. I wonder if that has something to do with my lack of issues? (I did try to use a 160GB iPod Classic one time... it didn't work... but worked great on my PS3 go figure lol)

Actual Edit: I also have stuck with under 4GB SD cards in the Wii's slot... I know you can use larger ones in it, but I felt like it was a hacked in support for larger drives so maybe was best avoided. So I didn't use any giant SD card (I have a ton of them)
