If you're on anything higher than 3.0, then you've already lost the ability to use a pure software hack. So in your case you might as well update now.

EDIT
Actually, forget what I said. Apparently there's still a chance of a software hack in the future at 4.1.0. Don't know how long that could be though.

There's no "chance" of it happening. It's confirmed softhacks will come for 4.1.0 eventually, but Kate and Co. are waiting for the chip revision before release since it isn't patched yet. There's been no mention if the hack can apply to 5.x+ or not though, which I assume it could if it hasn't been patched yet.

To be fair nothing is completely hack proof but what they left in there was the equivalent to the keys to the kingdom. I'm sure they would have had a massive code review of the ROM and hardened the code before releasing it to production though. Make no mistake that code will be in current T1 chips coming off the line.
That makes sense, because of Atmosphere and the Switch hack they are probably updating the chip in the consoles that they are manufacturing right now but honestly I expect hackers to be able to find another key.

Yep, but they could probably fix a few "issues" like the D-pad, the power dock at the bottom, etc. It's true that Nintendo is not that concerned about specs but one of the greatest things about X2 is that it saves much power for the same graphics output so Switch wouldn't need to downclock its chip. However, it seems that Mariko is a revised X1 and not a revised X2:

https://gbatemp.net/threads/some-new-information-that-hints-about-mariko.499203/

So if it's a revised X1 chip console what they are working on then it would be more similar to the current chip, I assume.
Some things they can't easily change. They can't add a dpad because it obstructs the ability to use the joycons sideways for multiplayer. They can't change the position of the USB C port because then it affects the orientation of the device when you place it in the dock.
The lower TDP of the X2 is cool. But you'd have to wonder how that affects manufacturing costs and how much of that is then pushed onto us. £280 for a handheld is already too much IMO.
I can imagine some great uses for the X2. You could probably upgrade the screen to 1080p (and potentially 4K in docked mode). You could maybe make it smaller and thinner by reducing the side of the heat sink/fins, the fan, etc because of the lower TDP.
But surely all of that would be saved for later on down the line like maybe a couple of years.

Sorry for reasking (my bad english :()
Did this mean, that the expolit works on 4.1.0 and 5.0.2, because it isn't patched So it doesen't matter?

There's no confirmation to that yet. They have not released the exploit for 4.1 yet (I forget the names, deja vu and one other I think) because there's a chance they will work on the new revision chips that patch Fusee Gelee. I would assume this means it is possible for CFW on 5.0+, but I'm not a dev, just a strong speculator.

I’m impressed at the speed that they are coding this. I originally thought it was a bad idea to post the progress of the build due to people usually getting impatient but I mean no one can be upset at the progress they’ve made so far. Wish I could help but my coding skills are very limited still to provide any sort of contribution. You guys are killing it!

The 4.x exploit chains don't work on 5.x, but some parts of it haven't been patched & it might be possible to reuse them in another exploit chain on 5.x.

That is why they are being held onto.

This just in:

A little more time passes, and Atmosphere's "Process Manager" sysmodule reimplementation also works on hardware. PM is still a work in progress (some commands not impl'd yet), but with PM + Loader + SM reimplemented+extended homebrew's gonna be in a great place pretty soon :)

Time to start your 'homebrew' hypetrain inbound clocks.... :)

Don't get ahead of yourself! There's still loads of network-related functions missing, like NIM for example, without NIM services you can't download or update games.
There's also no bcat or news support and the HID services aren't implemented, making it impossible to use controllers or interact with anything other than using the touch screen.

...why would I reimplement any those services? The stock ones will do perfectly well.

So what exactly is still left to do, SciresM?
Would be interesting to know the roadmap.

According to the issue #60 of the GitHub :
For Atmosphere's initial release, we're targeting the re-implementation of the Loader, SM, and Boot sysmodules.

The SM seems to be finished (issue #62).
the Loader seems OK too (issue #61).

I can't post any link, see the first post to get to the project's GitHub page.

I know this has been asked 1000 times and I'm sorry for asking this again but here it goes anyway:
Current firmware is 4.0.1. updating to 5.0.2 will not stop me from loading atmosphere cfw day 1 when it releases right? It says that it will be released for all fw versions & I'm ready to do the pin10 shorting hard mod anyway. So can I update to 5.0.2 now?

Correct. Any firmware on first revision Switches can be used safely. You won't lose access to CFW. The only reason you'd want to stay on 4.0.1 or lower is due to softmod entries.

It is so hard to stay on lower firmware knowing all you are missing out... Although I'm not missing out on much staying on 4.0.1 since I can't access eShop from my country (courtesy of Nintendo). Hopefully Naruto series get a physical release.

That's why some people have a second switch. I technically have a second switch on 3.0 but it's considered my little brother's. I use mine for gaming and staying up to date which is not so bad since you can do the hardmod with a paperclip
