*sigh* Okay, okay...while I seriously doubt you'll even register what I'm about to say, here are the given arguments against steam:

-it takes up half a gigabyte on installation
-updates itself every couple days
-it's DRM
-it throws up commercials of games every time you open it
-it's an unnecessary dependency that runs in the background, delaying game start and clogging up memory (note: only an issue on low-end specs)

Heck, I'll throw in another that's seriously bugging me at the moment:
-you can have a friend play a game on your account, but you can't play a different game at that same time

Yes, I know: it often has amazing deals in the form of summer/winter/whatever sales and bundles, is a massive platform that's both good and convenient for both gamers and developers and has an immense community. None of those, however, change the fact that these arguments exist and are valid. Suggesting there's something wrong with you if you want to avoid steam is just stupid, as steam itself was, is and always shall be just a means to an end, not the end goal itself. We both know that there are plenty of video games out there that aren't on steam*, and the gamers on those platforms couldn't care less.

*console gamers, mobile gamers, people who prefer blizzard or EA's recent titles, a whole army of indie gamers...there's plenty. Just because steam is the largest online shop doesn't mean that the games on it are better or worse than others.

Just add your friend to your family account or just close it when you don't use it

gee im sorry you hates updates to a fucking client, lets never fix bugs again.
i honestly dont care if theres drm as long as it doesnt hinder me or affect my experience negative (looking at origin and uplasy) but steam ONLY enhances my game for me. i have all friends, communities, guides, achiment, its thebest for me, so in such scenario i will glad ignore fact that it is drm, even tho i general dislike drm suck as securom ext.
ok, it does NOT throw up "commercial" that is just complte false. if u have no used client in long time it wil show some updates, but even these can be disable https://i.imgur.com/1uwcEKC.png , but most leave it on cuz unlike other prograns, steam shows good things like deal and relevant informations,.

if u feel this way then just pirate the game, legit. if u want to suport dev, buy game then pirate. i dont give 3 fucks so go rite ahed.

I see both sides of the argument here... my personal preference is towards steam... but there are some drawbacks (like not being able to play 2 games at once from ur steam library without going offline) that I dont really like... so I use SSEmu to get around those... About piracy tho... I personally dont do it unless im unsure about a purchase... if I like the game I buy it within 2 days of pirating it... my version of piracy tho is just getting a friend to share it with me then use SSEmu to play it so they can play it at the same time lol

Theres a steam emulator you can use.

A lot of independent games in steam dont have any copy protection through steam, so just making a link to the games exe works
