Hacking Been away from the 3DS hacking scene for a little while, a little confused about what RXTools does.

So from what I understand, RXTools is a custom firmware that does not require a flashcart. I have also read that you can boot directly into RXTools (unlike gateway). Right now, I have a O3DS with sysnand 4.2.0 and gateway updated to the latest emunand. Does RXtools boot into the present custom firmware on the SD card, or will it install a new custom firmware all together? That being said, if it's it's own thing entirely, will my gateway card and games stored on it be read by this custom firmware? And will exiting system settings boot back into sysnand like it does with gateway? Thanks in advance for you help :)

You need to be on 9.0 - 9.2 to boot directly into rxtools. Both rxtools and gateway use the same emunand; you can easily boot one or the other. Rxtools cannot read from the gateway card. It can play the same cias though (but there are some region issues that can be solved using some tools). If you install themehax (to boot directly into rxtools from power-on) then exiting system settings will just launch themehax again and put you back into rxtools.

* rxTools will use the exact same emuNAND as your Gateway. The only thing different is that you can't use your red cart (just CIA files).
* ignore the previous poster, you can use rxTools on 4.x (just have the right files on your SD card and install the nds file with your flashcart before booting with DS profile exploit).
* Yes, entering and exiting system settings will put you back on sysNAND. Basically rxtools behaves identically to Gateway but with a different-looking menu and you can't use your red cart

Search for rxTools 2.6, theres a good tutorial on installing it. You can skip a bit of it since you already have Gateway running. Before you throw away your Gateway cart, install BigBlueMenu to your emuNAND with it (way easier than what you have to do when you don't have access to a Gateway).

Thanks for the info! Regarding what the previous poster said, I think he implied that you can't simply get into RXTools from boot up on older firmware, not that it wasn't usable at all. On 4.2.0 can I boot into it directly from startup or do I have to launch it in a similar way to the gateway nand? If the latter, should I find a way to update to 9.2 if I want that feature? (I realize that's probably a tough procedure though)

It's highly recommended you update to 9.2 as you won't have to deal with save issues and compatibility issues for homebrew that can be used in Sysnand.

Ignore Quantumcat's post.
Updating to 9.0-9.2 is recommended since themehax (CFW-ON-COLDBOOT) supports those firms and not 4.x.

TRUE

um you quoted the op but missed the first half where he ask twice about auto-boot on cold boot so he needs 9.0/9.2 (also its rude to tell him to ignore someone if you believe samiam144 is wrong take that up with samiam144)

close enough

um im fairly sure the "good tutorial" you speak of was written by the guy you told the op to ignore.
just had to add a few things
edit: @bling_bling2000
1)Install sysupdater in your system nand https://github.com/profi200/sysUpdater/releases
2)Get rxTools 2.5.2 from rxtools.net
3)Get the 9.2 update from some iso site and place the updates folder in the root of your SD card.
4)Launch rxTools it in Dev Mode
5)load sysupdater
6)Press A to update
