On going clubbing, and the smaller numbers of them in the UK.

So this is probably about as non science/tech/hacking related topical as I get, which is to say I am only about two weeks after everybody else saw it and discussed it.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/artic...ing-at-alarming-rate-industry-figures-suggest

"The Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR), which represents venues, says in 2005 there were 3,144 clubs and this is now down to 1,733." Or if you prefer the number has more or less halved in 10 years, though some of the statistics are worth considering further in more detail.

Now the closest I get to a club these days is when one puts on a concert for a band I like, and that usually involves a train ride of a hour or more.
Of course I never liked clubs -- none around here ever played music I care for (which is to say I do not care for pop and bad electronic music of the day, I would also add opera to that list but opera club night I would have to go to just to say I did), paying way over the odds for drinks just seemed silly and pre smoking ban was not great and often left me wondering if I should even try to wash the clothes I wore out, post smoking ban is also not great but for different reasons and being in a place too loud to hold a conversation. Oh and I never got the logic behind no trainers.

On the flip side I am a miserable bastard when all is said and done, and combine the worst aspects of old before my time and perpetual adolescence. To that end what do fellow UK based/aware 'tempers think about the UK side of things and I would also be interested to hear the opinions of others about what goes where they are.

Maybe it's because I live in Manchester but we have 100's of clubs just in the city centre alone and thats no exaggeration, we also have really cheap drinks, I believe some of the cheapest in England on comparison. I'm 21 and do go into town clubbing (Yes I call my city centre a town, I think its a Manchester thing) semi regularly and it's a great vibe.

We have clubs for all music types and a variety of ages from my age youths to more sophisticated clubs so in my opinion the clubs aren't dying but I guess it depends on area. I agree with the article though in that if the clubs do keep decreasing it becomes harder and harder for people to get into the DJ'ing scene, which is a shame as the music is getting more and more manufactured by labels as time goes on and the people with real talent are going unnoticed

I think the fact that pubs are closing is something we should be worrying about, I see less and less everyday and the ones I do see are chains. I'm not saying the chain/brewery pubs are bad but you can't beat a good old fashioned independent pub with actual character and not the same look and feel as everywhere else

There's a few night clubs in my town, I dunno why anyone would ever go clubbing. What a shitty waste of time.
Pubs are much nicer for a social environment.

I wouldn't say it was a waste of time but I know some people aren't into it, if you like drinking and dancing for hours on end, clubbing is the best thing. Plus before I got with my GF it was a great place to meet girls (I know it sounds sleezy but it's true, I'm a 21 year old lad remember) and just generally have a good laugh with a load of mates

Don't like pubs, discos or clubs. Just too noisy and then some fuckhead might start causing shit.

I won't comment on ladies of the evening clubs because that's not my type of thing.
